Hi, I know this has been discussed before but I am thinking of upgrading our Tom Tom. It is about 10 years old. I am looking at a Garmin 51LMT-S at Halfords for £130. Supposed to be all sing and dancing. Has anyone got one and what are like? I have looked at the cheaper TomTom but it says after 3months you have to pay for speed camera updates. Garmen seems to have every thing although it is £40 dearer. Yes, we still use the good old fashioned map as well. Any information will be gratefully received.

I've been really happy with Garmin... got one in the van and a different model in the car. The lifetime maps really do save you a bundle on updates and it's always well worth keeping satnavs updated imho. Personally, I'd always want one in the van that is capable of taking the MH dimensions, so that it doesn't steer you down very narrow roads or low bridges. They cost a bit more but mine is getting on for 7 years old and still looks after me. Nothing wrong with TomToms either - I used to have one in the early days of satnavs and it was fine but I switched to have the dimensions element and lifetime maps when the van came along, which wasn't available on TomTom back then.

Just had an email from TomTom offering a flash sale have a look here ...TomTom | Flashdeals

We have the 5100 on that link, I think it's now succeeded by 5200? Whatever it's a very good satnav totally self contained for traffic across many countries without need to connect to a mobile, also 'lifetime' maps world wide and 'lifetime' speed cameras (not sure how many countries). The one downside is the icons for POI's, you cannot use 3rd party ones and have to choose from about 4 different ones, so you need to be organised to know what icon applies to what POI list.
