Brand new to all this - just joined and going to upgrade to full membership to take advantage of POI - need to buy a sat nav - any clues which one to go for??
many thanks

First of all - welcome :)

Lots of people will chip in with suggestions I'm sure.

What I would suggest you consider is one of the older TomTom units provided it's in good working order.

You can potentially save a fair bit of cash - but make sure you factor in getting updated maps if they are out of date.

The POI download includes Google Earth data for online use and sat nav POI files for all the main makes - TomTom, Garmin, Navigon and Navman.

Bear in mind that you can potentially use a smartphone with GPS - if you have one of these already you don't necessarily need to buy a dedicated sat nav. CoPilot 8 software supports the use of TomTom POI data, for example.

The next release of the Wild Camping POI data is set for the Spring, and there'll be well over 2,000 places listed for England, Scotland and Wales.

Regards

Chris

I'd say TomTom - we love our TomTom XL. For the money its a bargain. Also a lot of poeple have Garmin - but I just don't fall for them....,

Also consider Autorotue for PC for planning and seeing maps and locations.

I host a load of GPS databases (for TomTom, Autoroute and Garmin) on my website - so these with Canalsman database you will never be short of a home for the night!

I have a Garmin widescreen and have been VERY pleased with it. I would say go for a Garmin or Tomtom, there are some very cheap units on the market; however most are only UK - Are you NEVER going to venture abroard?

Remember the very cheap ones are not upgradeable!

hi all
hope I'm not hijacking this post but can anyone tell me if the p.o.i download can be added to a tomtom one and if so how??? not being fully wired up with these er computer things!!!

thanks

another dowside of this unit, for what it costed me , not really money well spent

What model number is it? Have you tried using Google to find out if it's possible?

I assumed that Snooper units were speed detector devices - are they sat navs?

its snooper ventura s7000, 7 inches screen sat nav, (my arm not long enough to read small print anymore) found it difficult to use, got camera warning, also will only take POI in only one GPS format, not the one that google use, I have a few files with various POI , yours included thanks, in my pc but not really know how to integrate them to unit.

I have been unable to find anything on the internet that tells you how or if you can download your own POI's to this unit.

I suggest that you give them a ring or email them and ask ...

Sorry :(

I don't believe that ...

I think you will find that TomTom are trying to sell you a map upgrade. But you don't have to choose to do that - it's optional.

Note that the instructions on the link that I gave you tell you to close TomTom Home if it starts ...

Have another go and follow the instructions to the letter ...

hi canalsman
thanks for your reply I'll have another go when a friend comes over, he's more up to speed than me with these computer things but thanks for your help and if I get it sorted I'll let you know.

Illegal in Europe

Be warned that speed camera detectors are illegal in much of Europe. In some counties, it is not illegal to have one but it is to use it! They are likely to become illegal in the UK too soon.

Oneof my contacts has just moved to Amsterdam as the partner of a TomTom exec. According to her, TomTom are considering using a unique to them Poi format on models now in development to link users entirely to their system.
As a side issue for CoPilot 8 users, December had a fairly massive upgrade to the programme and a considerably revised UK map from December 15th.
Both are availabe through CoPilot Central, also upgraded.

snooper S7000

I am a new member and would like to know how to download wildcamping P O I for our snooper S7000 or at least ask if it is possible to do so, Thanks
