Santander Overnight Stop

We will shortly be heading for Portugal again but this time via Santander rather than Bilbao. As the ferry arrives late afternoon we really need somewhere close by to overnight, and understand that unlike Bilbao there is no space at the ferry terminal

Any suggestions?

you could stop at the big shell station on the way to torrelavaga . have used it a few times . or we stop at sierra pando railway station on the east side of torrelavago. its not far from carrefour ,lidl, aldi, etc . ideal for stocking up.

Plenty of info in the other thread, we stopped at both Lierganes & Cabarceno. Of the 2 Lierganes is probably a bit closer & easy enough to get to about 15 kms from Santander.

There is a great place about 10 miles from the port at Cabarenco next to a nature park where you can see elephants wandering around in the "wild". The aire is next to a lake with fresh water and grey/black water facilities. There is also a very small town/village which has a few bars/restaurants and a general store. We got off the ferry intending to stay there 1 night but ended up staying 2. Highly recommended.

Get of the ferry and then follow the road up towards the lighthouse, loads of parking in a couple of carparks. I can be windy and on some occaisions, noisy with cars coming and going.

no, but in the morning on monday . i did say stay at the railway station . its just up the road . turn in by the petrol staion . not that many trains . then in morning drop into lidl etc for stocking up and getting an idea of the prices .
we used to stop by a farm entrance right by the petrol station but it was fenced off the last two years . i imagine the old boy as died he was a nice chap. lived in a house there .
we stock up then head off to canyon de los rio lobos past burgos turn left . on the soria road . turn off again in leonardo de yagu. been doing it for years . then down to lac de gallocanta . to look for cranes . google it its famous.

We stayed at the aire next to the wildlife park on sat and sun, terrific, if you stay it's worth walking into the village and having one of the set menus in one of the restraunts there's loads, for 8 euros two courses bread and a bottle of wine, can't fault it. On to the Picos.

The Lierganes aire is a bit closer than Caberceno, it is next to the railway station. I think it was about 4 or 5 Euros for a return to Santander. Caberceno is nice if the weather is good, if you park on the official parking area which unfortunately not that flat you can pick up a few unlocked WiFi signals, most people park on the car park which is flatter.

overnight near santander

We stopped at an aire at Lierganes, about 20 minutes from Santander, its right by the station which is very quiet after 8pm. The small town is only 5 minutes walk where there are restaurants, banks and bars. The car park is very large so space should not be a problem.
There is a small Carrefour supermarket at the edge of the town where you can get essentials (many supermarkets in Spain do not open on a Sunday)

Hello
Stayed at both the aires mentioned. Both very good.
Lierganes is a pleasant small town with an excellent bakery and butchers a couple of hundred metres from the aire.

Blue Skies

Thanks for the info. Stayed at Caberceno, quite busy on a Saturday night but an excellent stop unless you need fresh water, for me the source was suspect. Clearly popular with the Spanish and the GC were round at dusk. The gully drain is in need of repair an I have seen easier to use toilet disposal facilities.

I have dicovered that the bump down of the waste dump at the aire damaged my grey waste pipe so watch out.
