Salt damage

Anyone been using their van since they have been salting the roads? Take a look at your brake discs if you have layed it up for a few weeks, took the wheels off my Hymer at the weekend and found disks heavily corroded , managed to emery them back to normal and avoided them ripping the pads to bits.

Hi rommel,
thought sand would have been more appropiate with a name like yours
but that said, a good idea of yours to clean off the salt and grit.
Take care and wash around all the joints in the body work, and re wax, done mine yesterday and found loads of salt stuck hard in the panel joints, so a good wash n wax won't go amiss at this time, and wash underneath with a fine but pretty powerfull jet spray. Not forgetting the roof, a lot of spray from the roads get's on top as well.

I spray the underside of my van with FS365 Protector, Anti-corrosion Spray, Scottoiler Solutions.

It's obviously no good for your brakes but it neutralises salt & protects everything it comes into contact with.

I read somewhere that salt should be washed off with cold water. Hot water speeds up the corrosion process.

Its my big job this weekend once this new cold snap is over, a thorough wash and polish. Whats the betting they throw more salt on the roads just before we travel to Leek

i have been in mine all over winter and the sills have took a hammering with all this salt i need to do a lot of work under there in the next couple of weeks even to the extent of welding thats how bad it gets in there some holes appeared but nowt i carnt deal with over a weekend

I do motorhome valeting, and you wouldn't believe how many people use regular detergent to clean their vans and cars. Regular detergent contains salt.

Regular traffic film remover should also be avoided as it is extremly corrosive, you can buy a non-corrosive version but it is dearer.

Hot water will help remove the salt or any other dirt easier than cold as the heat helps disolve salt and dirt.
