I am a newbie to this site, so please give me some leeway. I have been motor homing for 9 years, mainly abroad. I am now retired and would like to leave my mh in France on a permanent basis (secure site of course). However, my insurance and other uk insurances won't have none of it. I am confused, how do other Brits manage this rather simple arrangement, after all we are all in the eu - aren't we? Does anyone have any comments, ideas or even strategies cos I am fed up of paying to cross the channel one way or another, not forgetting the long drive from the north of England.

Hi and welcome

The problem is that if you want to take your vehicle on the road at any time you will have to bring it back to the UK to get it MOT'd, regardless of whether or not anyone will insure it (all vehicles in the EU have to be taxed, insured and tested as if they were at home). On the other hand, if you are leaving it on-site full time then you do not need the conventional insurance that you would get if you were driving it. You presumably just want to insure it as you might a house or any other property. I don't know if this is possible but it is maybe a different avenue for you to investigate. If you want to leave it in, say, France and use it on the road legally then you will have to re-register it as a French vehicle - but for that you need an address and residence in France. All in all, it might be simpler and easier to pay the £30 or £40 ferry fee! Happy travels.

Give axa a call in nice...English speakingu team and they will insure you on French insurance which means you don't need an mot although they might expect on expiry of your mot a controle technique, which is not as rigid and every two years...(for most classes of vehicle)

The gardiennage address will do , naturally you are looking for the dream property in France which when found you would register to that address...

Hope this helps

Wow, talk about dynamic! Thank you John h and Channa. Thought it might be the case to register mh in France but might try Channa's suggestion first. Just for your info, I would expect to bring it back for a mot every year - do you think there is another way ahead? Once again man thanks.
