Just planning stage two of our epic adventure which is of course heading over to France in mid to late June. Im thinking of not rushing down to Dover and maybe having a couple of nights at Rutland Water. Im sure its been mentioned before on here. Is there enough to do there to keep us occupied for a couple of nights or maybe three. Of course we will have the scooter with us and the Kayak so I imagine so. Anything worth seeing in the local area within 20 miles in any direction?

The two sites of choice seem to be Lyndon Top or Rutland Water campsite next to the sailing club. Both appear to be large Aire type sites. Which one is the best?

We have stopped at Lyndon Top a handful of times, massive area with lots of options to picks spot. We never managed to find the RW site, prior to booking into LT site. We always enjoy a cycle around the loch, which is a fair distance doing a 360.

I’m not sure what other options are around there with you having MB mode of transport, others more qualified can advise better than moi.

Only thing that put me off Lyndon top on the search for sites reviews is someone mentioned the stink from too many fire pits but they are banned on the Rutland Water (Sailing club) site as are tents. I appreciate ill be in a minority on here but I hate fires :D Its only a couple of nights anyway. Im pretty sure its one of @Robmacs favourites.

Lyndon Top is a big area Barry, different fields but good firm ground, or was when I have been. Never bothered looking around what there apart from walking and views over the lake/reservoir. I think there is stuff to see though and villages to visit. When I have been there more than an odd night its been meeting up with others so we stayed put

I have never had any issues with campfires when there, I prefer the bottom field with uninterrupted view over the loch.

Cheers. Sounds good. Its roughly half way between home and Dover and neither of us have ever been. I'm thinking two or three days there then maybe try Canterbury park and ride for a night which we should be able to get to in good time from Rutland Water for a rake around there as well. Normally we just slog to Dover in one hop (about 310 miles) and then do the same across France or Belgium the next day and its a bit wearying.

Check out Atlas Obscura (there's a website I think, and definitely an app). I probably read about it on here but it tells you what interesting stuff is in the area you are in or are going to.

AFAIK the best bits of Rutland Water that you might like to explore are cordoned off for the wildlife, but then I've only been on the water for racing.
As for the area, depends what you like, gf likes to visit Barnsdale set up by Geoff Hamilton, I seem to recall there was some interesting shopping in Grantham, but 20+ years ago.

Sounds like they are a bit health and safety mad. £25 to launch your own kayak and a set of rules as long as your arm. :(

Oakham is nice and if you can get into the castle museum to see the horse shoes and rural life exhibit,
Stamford is a nice wandering town ,
Spread out but some nice shops/beer gardens,
If you like stately homes you are close to burleigh house,
A little bit further out is bradgate deer park another place for a picnic wander around,
Of course you could check rockingham motor speedway to see what’s on
Hope this helps

Scrap that I didn’t know it was closed to racing

Thanks. Looks like sailing might be a possiblity as well. I've contacted the sailing club. It's right near the two motorhome campsites as well.

Never heard of that before...

Are you sure?

That implies a cap on how much you can use your motorhome in a year.
No, it is a limit of the length of each trip.

So if the max trip is 31 days and it is 3 days to get abroad and 3 days to get home you have a max of 25 days abroad.

??? 🤔 🤷‍♀️

Just go for a one-off trip, and/or the option to return home up to 7 days on 3 occasions over an 18 moth period?

Looks like there's plenty of options to suit and no need for a 31 day max limit, or am I reading this all wrong?

Seems implausible to me that you can't get a suitable insurance to cover you - but maybe in today's mad world this is now the case ... ? 🤷‍♀️
