On starting to drive today with window down rotten egg smell coming in window no smell with windows closed stopped van checked gas all okay stopped at destination thought about checking battery 12.75v checked the water in the each cell all plates cover started engine charging at 14.2v battery was cool to touch, any ideas what might be causing smell it’s a fiat 130 2.2...

AFAIK probably your exhaust, catalytic convertor pong.
Usually described as sulphurous smell.

With windows open it's probably coming from the waste tank.

A coachbuilt body creates a drop in pressure inside the van when the windows are open. The smell comes back through the waste water pipework. Try putting the plugs in the sinks and shower.

The water in my waste pipe traps get shaken out after a run along
wobbly roads, sometimes results in a sulphurous whiff from the w/tank.

If its the cat then your driving it to slow or short hops, mainly only happens to petrol engines,if its the wast tank empty and flush with cola.

Re.rotten egg smell

Possibly about a couple of gallons, have gone on to the motorway and given here a good blast was wondering if it was catalyst converter needs a bit of a blow through...will try cola on our last run home on Monday enjoy the rest of weekend now parked up at prestonpans gorgeous evening thanks for all your help again....

Hi, its your battery or battery's being over charged, run for a while and check to see if battery's are getting warm, could be alternator if you charge that way. they need checking as soon as possible.

Hi I run engine for a 20 min and voltage were 14.2 and fell back to 14.1 after 10 minutes is that what you would expect...the battery was cool no heat at all..and with battery under passenger s feet you would have. thought the smell would be more noticeable with the windows closed ...

If you haven’t used the van for a few days and it’s been hot, the water in the waste traps evaporates, leaving a clear path for waste tank smells to enter the van. Happens to ours sometimes. Try pouring a cup of water down the plug holes to see if that cures it, or, as others have said, put the plugs in.

Take the filler cap off the windscreen water bottle and smell it.
I have had this before it was a thick build up that stunk like a toilet in the bottle due to washing up
liquid being used instead of proper screenwash. john.

Never use washing up liquid as it has salt in it & bu--ers up the pump.

Well that seems like a good charge, battery's not warm so can rule them out then, sorry I really thought it would have been the batteries. Do you have solar, ? if you do check all the connections on your controller.

Eggy smell is very typical of goosed batteries, something frying them or they are just knackered

Re.rotten egg smell
