Ok you guys and galls
Just renewed the road tax on the motorhome ,having had it since march bought with 6 months tax already on it ,i have just put a 12 month ticket on it ,now realising i will probably take it off the road at the end of October until March of next year (that's around 4 months ).
What do you people do declare it off the road "sorn"and get a refund for the 4 months around £70 and then re- tax in March ,or don't you bother in case you get itchy feet and fancy a ride out?

Road tax unfair ??

Look into your insurance, because isn't your insurance void if vehicle is not taxed ? or is it still insured while sorned ? It's a bit of a minefield this 'tax' business to be honest,as usual, people think things up,bring new things in etc,and dont look at all the seperate Insurance, mot and tax,as they all work with one another ??(if you see what i mean)
If there's an accident at home,in any way, will the vehicle be covered ?
I'm going to say it again, the taxing of a motor home is a bit fague as far as i'm conserned anyway,as if your out of the original country longer than your documents (tax, insurance or mot) then basicly your driving ilegally and breaking the law,but theres nothing setup to be or get legal in Europe, and as we're all European citisens who have the right to travel in these countries, but at the moment, sometimes you have to travel more than 2000 miles back to become legal again, and why you would tax for your home country, when your away in another European one,for longer than its worth, sometimes paying their road tax in the form of a vignette !!Road tax is suppose to be for that, using your vehicle on the highway (of UK)
Sorry to put this across on your post, but it needs to be dealt with.

:D put ours on sorn last october and then went and taxed it a week later and went to blackpool  used it as normal all winter  it just seemed like a good idea at the time

p.s. clear blue skys and sunshine again here in donny today

Hi there
I would tax it as it's not good to leave the van for months without a run( I try 6 weeks or less ) and we hope to use it over the winter ;)

we use our van all year round...whats the point of it sitting rotting away!!! Plenty of places to wild camp that have hard standing. After all most motorhomes are self sufficient these days.

Hi Barnybg Can't be 100% sure but I believe you are correct. To be legal in any Eurozone country the vehicle has to be up to date with all documents which makes it legal in the country of registration. You are allowed a limit of 6 months stay out of 12 in any 1 Eurozone country before it becomes necessary by law to register your vehicle in that country.
Regards Nolly.

Lack of use IS the biggest 'killer' of motor vehicles, you should see the state of some of the horse boxes we get in due to lack of use! Tyres and wheel bearings need rotating, batteries need charging, interiors need a change of air, and even fridges like a cycle now and again. So I would say for the sake of saving fifty quid keep it taxed and have a ride out now and again.

Take the van off the road ??????????????????? I would eat Worms first LOL LOL

We use our 25 year old motorhome all year round so would never SORN it. Had some lovely times out in snow last year in North Wales and were never cold. We don't have land to store it on anyway, so the difference between sorning it and paying storage is minimal.

bet you wish it was a little bit older .like a 1972 . they have good road tax. cheers alan.

I usually SORN my car when we go off on our travels, if you surrender the tax disc just 1 day into a month you don't get a refund for that month and on return home if you tax back to the first of the current month you in effect lose a months tax, so the jolly old exchequer win both ways.:(:(:(:(:(

That's the whole point surely? Have motorhome - go places in it, otherwise save tax, insurance, storage, depreciation etc - just hire one for 2 weeks a year... :D

Donsider

Have had my motorhome for six years and just discovered I had been overcharged
road tax all these years.
Just noticed my friends tax disc shows £165 and mine showed £190.
I was rated PLG and he was HGV,both vans same weight, length, same engine etc.
The mistake had been made when my van was first registered,
DVLC will pay back the difference for this year but too bad for the past five years.
Has anyone else experienced this problem ?
