I have just done a search for road tax rates for my van for this year from 1st September when it is due, big jump from last year, still, I expect the money will be used to repair the pot holes in our roads ?

The rate of tax you are talking about is Cars and Light Goods Vehicles Registered before 1st March 2001. See: Vehicle tax rates: Cars and light goods vehicles registered before 1 March 2001 - GOV.UK

What I can't understand is why my van which was registered in December 2008 falls into this category.

Anyway as you say the rate is going up from £245 last year to £255 this year - a 4% increase!

It doesn't. Commercial Vehicles are not rated on emissions, so when the rules were changed in 2001, Cars went into bands, Commercials went flat rate generally (with spordic 'specials' happening) see Vehicle tax rates: Other vehicle tax rates - GOV.UK
I wouldn't be too upset about it if I were you. fair chance your engine would be taxed at a highish rate? (a VW T5 Commercial was £245 last year, my 2008 VW T5 'Car' was £295)

Well I put a number from my V5 document into the dot gov website as asked to do, and it came up with all my vehicle details and also how much it was going to cost this year from 1st September when my tax is due for renewal [ see pasted detail in first post], my van was first registered in 2004. 2.8 JTD, 3.5 tonnes GWV. 7.6 metres.

Why? Pot holes no longer exist in our roads. They have been redefined as speed depressions whose purpose is to slow traffic and improve road safety thereby removing the need to fill them in, this saves an immense amount of money which can be better spent on essentials, such as MPs pay rises and expenses!

£165 for mine  V11 due any day now so straight online and get it done ready for 1st May

By van I meant Adria Twin PVC.
Was it registered as a commercial vehicle (N1 for a 2008) prior to being a Motor Caravan though? If it was, then it is taxed as a commercial vehicle for the rest of its life no matter what you do.
If it was converted and THEN registered (so an M1 on the V5C for a 2008) it will be taxed just like any 2008 Car (like my 2008 VW T5 was, as that was a Diesel Car and not a Diesel Van)

Adria are a Slovenian Company - probably one of the largest motorhome manufacturers in Europe. Their motorhomes are imported into Britain as Motor Caravans. and registered as such.

Then your 2008 Motor Caravan will be taxed at car rates not as pre-2001 PLG rates (which unless I misunderstood your post, you said it was?).
Have you N1 or M1 on the V5C?

It is taxed as PLG. I have queried this with DVLA and they say it is correct. I have my doubts as you suggest! Where on the V5C should I look for N1 or M1?
