road tax for campers.......

Not good if you are considering a new van.
Existing motorhome owners may find their van increase in value, because of it though.

The government have to raise money from somewhere, motor-homers are wealthy community and as such are a target for taxation.

SINCE I COULD never afford a new one i am hoping i wont be too badly affected.....

Generally speaking harrow I agree with your post, but what irks me is that I have no doubt that whilst we pay even more in taxes more and more barriers and no parking for Motorhomes signage will be erected. Also unlike Europe and other parts of the world our local and national politicians will continue to treat us like parasites, to be singled out for vindictive treatment.

You are not alone - they have also victimised landlords over the last 4 years with horrendous new taxes - mind you no one minds about us as we are the scum of the earth !!!

Why should motorhomes be any different as they are not being used as the tax class was intended for, commercial work and are used as leisure vehicles.
Motorshome's are in general much more polluting than cars, right now, the tax is for as many miles as you wish.

Given climate change is almost certainly contributed by man and we are trying to reduce our emissions as a country, why should motorhomes not pay by emissions created ?

A solution maybe, as many owners do few miles, change by mile would be fairer for all vehicles, the more miles and more pollution, the more you pay.
Easier to levied on fuel.

Just a thought

Think we already have that system pay per mile it’s called tax on fuel road tax is just a stealth tax on people who drive it used to be said it was to pay for new roads and road repairs but now they’ve come up with a newer excuse they now say it’s an emissions tax give it a more up-to date name and a more current agenda gives them an excuse to screw us at every turn I’m getting fed up with all this mamby pamby green and global warming stuff I agree it is happening but governments are just using it as an excuse to screw the ordinary man for more money and taxes if they spent it properly then good but I’ve seen first hand council bin trucks who take the stuff from you’re blue recycling bins straight onto landfill site and bury it and I mean I’ve seen first hand 5 6 trucks a day do this. Where dose it stop they can’t tax the fumes away they’ll still be running diesel trucks in a hundred years from now.

Quote: "This will mean the VED will increased from £265 to £2,315 while tax costs will also be higher for the first five years of the vehicle’s life."

Do cars pay £2,315 VED, which ones?

And the VED IS the £300 extra for the first 5 years, tautology, doesn't make much sense.

I reckon general mcaulif at the battle of the bulge December 1944 called it right.

When asked to surrender by his German counterpart he answered “nuts”

And if this comes to fruition this is completely nuts.

I just bought a new mh, but never again if this stupidity becomes a fact.

Vehicle tax rates - GOV.UK

If a new 140ps Ducato panel van is 200g/km, empty with no payload,if it
was a VW California declaring co2 it would be £1850 first year plus tax.
Motorhomes are often running close to the max payload.
All government seem to have done is close the loophole as a motorhome is not a commercial vehicle.

As for “ordinary man” paying too much tax, compared to many countries we pay less tax overall.
Perhaps given the social care crisis we as a country we haven’t paid enough tax for years, no one wants to Pay tax if they can avoid it.
Politicians say we can have income tax cuts and more services, the required revenue to run the country somehow.

I tried to find out about this when buying a campervan earlier this year & was told by the dealer it wouldn't apply to my van. I was originally supposed to pick it up around mid March but because of problems with it I rejected the van & had to wait until July for the replacement. I was reading somewhere that vans purchased after April might be liable for the extra tax, I am confused at what the situation is. Are the dealers being negligent not informing buyers or are they misleading buyers. Also my daughter is due to pick up a new van on 1st September & the dealer was asked about the tax & said it wouldn't apply to their van. I would ring the DVLA but past experience with them doesn't inspire me with confidence.
There seems to be mixed messages from some of the dealers found this from Spinney VED Tax Increase- Beat the Tax! which basically says that it is applied from 2020?????

We already pay that way through tax on fuel.

A diesel motorhome averaging around 30mpg is very likely near or above the highest co2 category for the car VED banding so in the event of car VED rates being applied in future it is very likely the highest figures would be applied.

The official government co2 figures for large panel vans are for vans unladen. Motorhomes by their nature are near fully laden 100% of the time and so the co2 rating could be a minimum of 50% higher than these official figures.

If the VED rules do change it could lead to a massive swing back in favour of caravan sales over motorhome sales.

Maybe caravan builders should start designing caravans with onboard water and waste tanks, automatic drop down stabilisers which operate at the press of a button, fit motor movers as standard, and fit solar panels on the roof as standard?

All that extra kit means extra weight and the current licenses don't come with grandfather's rights to have an MTW over 3.5 tonnes. So the choice seems either a light caravan or a motorhome with MAM no more than 3,500 kg unless you fancy taking a second driving test: C1 or B+E.

Tuggers should start worrying too, CO2 emissions on the pull car must go through the roof when towing, so trailers must be taxed, appropriately to get in the proportiont VED.

Guilt

I do have a bit of guilt when I see my exhaust smoke sometimes.
I only pay £165 tax.
Also remember in five years time tyres and brake pads will start to be heavily taxed as they will be the new pollutant bogeymen, once electric cars are mainstream.

Seems I am persuaded to keep my old more polluting MH rather than replace it with a newer less polluting model...er, funny stuff this new legislation!

All seems typical of our Government just looking to increase indirect taxation by any means possible. If you look at ads for a used motorhome, majority seem always to have very low mileage, certainly well below the sort of accepted norm of 8-10K per annum. Then look at an ex courier van of the same age with 100,000 miles minimum - both vehicles below 3500kgs - which type has polluted the atmosphere more? My son's new privately used Tranny Custom is less polluting than many cars but he still pays the commercial vehicle under 3500kgs rate - the Govt makes a fortune on every white (or any other colour) van on the road.
