Road tax is due on the car at end of the month, got the renewal notice through the post this week so tried to renew it on line.Typed in the details waited for next page to load then another screen popped up"your insurance details cannot be found on the database" flippin great "possible reason could be that your insurance is about to expire".....It does in a weeks time okay not a problem i will do it at the good old fashioned post office, off i go m.o.t...check,insurance certificate...check,renewal notice...check,£101.75...check.Handed them over at post office counter, err sorry can't issue you with tax disc as the current insurance policy only has a week to run.Wouldn't you think if it's a valid certificate then it must be accepted apparently not.I have to wait for new certificate to arrive before i can renew. So beware anyone whose road tax and insurance are about to expire, you may leave the post office empty handed.:mad:Got back home returned to DVLA website where they have a "HAVE YOUR SAY"section i was very happy to oblige needless to say.Andy.

Your problem is that your insurance expires BEFORE your new disc starts, therefore at the time your tax becomes valid ie. 1st Feb you have no cover. If your insurance expired on the 2nd Feb you would have been OK. The same applies with the MOT, it must be valid at the time you tax starts, not at the time you apply.

Hi Geoff, you are right of course but at the time of applying for tax i have a valid certificate,if someone was to knowingly cheat the system then they could cancel their insurance policy after renewing the tax disc.:confused:Andy.

I assume you ticked the box on their behalf as a public service??

"I confirm that the vehicle detailed above is registered, owned or insured by either my employer or myself and is regularly driven by me. I understand it is an offence to wrongfully obtain information of this nature without reasonable cause and if I fail to provide true reasons for acquiring information I may be committing an offence of unlawfully obtaining data contrary to section 55 of the Data Protection Act 1988. I declare that the information provided will not be used for any purposes unrelated to this enquiry. I agree to the terms of use as stated on this web site"

Yes, I had reasonable cause.

ok your insurance may be valid now but it will not be at the start of your tax disk and as your tax disk is not valid untill after your insurance runs out then you cannot renew your tax disk as you will not be insured

You seem to have jumped over "I confirm that the vehicle detailed above is registered, owned or insured by either my employer or myself and is regularly driven by me".

Presumably you therefore have "registered, owned or insured" every vehicle in your street?.
And I doubt if curiosity would meet Blackstone's definition of "reasonable cause" as we are taught it

Car Tax

I am more worried about paying FOR the disc...electric...gas...council tax...house & contents insurance...income tax...VAT.....(& whatever else new labour's Brownie Boy can think up) than worry about some other cratur's insurance. Blackstone, Whitestone, Redstone or not !!!!!

Hi Mandrake, that's the reason given to me at the post office it's just the inconvenience of at all, never had tax disc and insurance running out in the same month before but it must affect a lot of drivers. When i bought the car last year the previous owner had left 5 months disabled tax on it so being honest i surrendered it and filled out the appropriate form so the tax began at the beginning of February hence the problem.Andy.

yes it is a bit expensive to have tax and insurance coming together but one easy way to alter this is you insure your van or car for 12 months and tax it for six months then next time you tax you do it for 12 months gives you 6 months difference after that
