Recieved a letter for renewal for my Road Tax which is due on 1st November. I have decided that I want to TAX and INSURE my MH from 01.04.2011 to 31.10.2011 and so on yearly. Is this possible? Will I have to change my plate with the dates that my MH is taxed & Insured. In Germany I used to have a plate which showed the period I was permitted on the road, with the months and year impressed on the right hand side of the plate. Is it the same in England? Secondly, Am I allowed to park my MH on a private road behind my house when the tax is not in force? There are 5 houses where this private road is, which is a cul-de-sac. We have to pay for the upkeep of this road. I asked my neighbours but they were unsure about it. My Insurance company said they will insure me for the time I drive and also cover me for theft or damage when I am not permitted to drive. The problem I have is with the Tax. From what I understand is that I have to SORN the MH. Can I not tax the MH for 5 months in the year.
By the way the Tax for my MH has gone up to £205 pa. What a rip off.

off road

if you want to take your van off the road you have to notify the DVLA it called
statutary off road notice (sorn).
if you don't notify them you get an £80 fine.
it's easy to do.
you can do it online at their website, and you get an e mail confirming it.

i agree with ***** about the private driveway (it's private)

good luck

Hi David
UK tax is for either 12 or 6 months. If you want 5 months only, you would have to tax it for 6 and then send the tax disc back prior to the end of the 5 months for a refund. It would have to be at the tax office before the end of the 5 month period.
Regarding parking in the private rd. As it is a private rd it could be stored there without road tax or insurance, however it would be wise to have fire & theft and possibly public liability. What would happen if a delivery truck hit it and did not report the damage? I think you would also need to cover for that.

Hi Graham, It came to me after I posted. Instead of renewing my tax, due on 1st Nov, I will SORN the MH. I will be needing the MH on 1st May, I will apply for a 6 month Tax disc. That should solve my problem. Please confirm, Am I right in doing it this way. Re: Insurance, that seems to be okay with the Insurance company, I mentioned fire & theft but not public liability, I will call them again tomorrow. Question: Do I remove my plates from the MH during the SORN period or leave the plates on? Thanks for your advice including Bevo

Another thought has arisen. I have mentioned in earlier posts about Insurance & Tax. My MOT is due on the same day as I am going to SORN the MH. Do I have to MOT my MH now. Can I not renew my MOT when I retax my MH before the 1st of May? Sorry for all the hassle, first time ever with this problem in England.

hi you can mot the vehicle a month earlier thanit runs out .shuld say about it on old mot. i tax some of mine may to end of oct. be carefull parking on the road it may be private cared for but it may be open to the public ,this can effect the legality a bit. best not have it on a road unless its a gated road , a driveway is different. its allowed on a driveway. i always think if you keep them moted its ready to go no messing and you could tax it in your local post office and display tax straight away. cheers alan.
also leave number plates on the kind of belong to the vehicle for ever , not like germany. if the van stasys in uk it will always keep that number even if its sold to someone up country .

Thanks Graham and Alan. Everything sorted in my mind, so will go ahead with my plan. Thanks to all for your advice.

Hi Alan,

Only playing devil's advocate cos it's you!:D If it was deregistered from the DVLA under Common Law it would not need any number plates! Not trying to be cocky - just teasing! Still getting REALLY interested in this law stuff, both common law and other areas.

bloody welsh poke their nose in they arent even part of england . lets get them . anybody fancy a sheep no it could be caspers girl friend . ha ha . no offence always get the sheep to look over a cliff face makes them push backwards welshman told me that . hee hee i only eat pasties and look for piskies not goblins . but that sounds good .
hello dave keep on reading . it gets worse. you could be right but i cant go telling it now its too late. cheers alan.

Yes you can SORN it anytime that you want.
Regarding MOT, if the MOT runs out, you can drive it to an MOT station, but you cannot drive it away if it fails, therefore the MOT station would have to do any work required.
As Alan says, the number plates stay with the vehicle and any subsequent owner, a little different than Europe where the plates are personal or area coded.
The rest seems to have been answered

Hi *****

You can drive an MOT failure from the test station to another repairer. Not all MOT test stations do repairs. You cannot drive it home and then to the repairer, it must be a single journey.

A vehicle without an MOT must have an appointment at the test station, before it is driven there.
