RHD campervan to France

Hi all,new to this,so hope I'm posting on the right bit. Relocating to France and trying to purchase a French LHD here to drive over for less than £5000 is proving difficult. So looking at a Renault Trafic T1100 D Rendevous Campervan which is nice and compact and cheap:).

Does anyone know if this will be difficult to register in France and what I will need?

thanks in advance.
Shaz

You will not be able to register a motorhome that has the habitation door on the "british" side in France

Cheers, but what is the habitation door? The door on this model is at the rear:confused:

yesterday I met a couple here at mojacar with their french registered autosleeper ...habitation door english side
they said it wasn't a problem to change from a uk registration
I too understood this couldn't be done , but in france the different departements seem to make up the rules as they go along :(

doors at the back no problem of course ....so the motorhome you mention should be no problem

From living there a while I can guarantee that buying in France will cost you at least 20% more than here, there are some on Ebay, just type in 'left hand drive; after motorhomes.

You have six months to reg in France. If its a motorhome you will need a cert of conformity, so whatever you buy stay away from selfbuilds or any modified vans. I brought my landrover over and had no problems, just changed the headlights and fitted rear seatbelts. I advise you to buy any spares you may need in the UK, even if its French its very much more expensive to buy parts here. We have a Fiat based motorhome (bought in Germany) and save as much as 50% on items such as filters.
France is a Great place to live once the paperwork is done. The simpler you keep it the easier it is. If you need any help dont hesitate to ask.
All the Best Terry.

Know it well and have ben sitting in front of it for about 3 hrs:eek:

I have been told the same, when purchasing ours we looked at a right hand drive MH and looked into the issues with different positions of the steering wheel.

In France I was told that a side fitted HAB door must open onto the pavement. So must be on the right. To be honest you would not want it any other way

Just like getting an MOT in the UK I would expect there is a certain amount of luck involved so you might manage to register one with it on the left but don't count on it.

I expect that you will also have to have the head lights changed to stop dazzling traffic, I don't think that temp beam adjusters are allowed long term. You should check this as for older vehicles or uk specific vehicles this might be a problem

Hi Sharron,Why France ?they eat frogs there :) ? Come to BULGARIA,far better.

Just a thought, can you use a UK address (parents?) then once a year, visit 'home' (its not far is it !) while visiting,mot/tax and insure ,solved....
I have a UK right hand drive, and although a little awkward at times have managed for 3 years, driving Europe, its up to you, wether you really need a left-hand drive...a cheap alternative (caravan) ..i know, dont shoot me !

European built m/homes can be RHD and have the habitation door on the continental nearside. There are plenty of them about.

I think it is only Romahome who currently build a van with a rear hab. door. If they are big enough for you, I have seen some cheap examples online.
