Hi
I have just fitted a reversing camara to my van the main reason for seeing when reversing but also wanted to use it to keep an eye on the boat i am towing sometimes.
Is it legal to view the monitor whilst driving on the road or is classed similar to a television?
Thanks

It is the same as a rear view mirror. I run with mine on all the time to keep an eye in the car and trailer.

Watching a TV program or Video while driving is different to keeping an eye on a safety monitor.

Mine only works when I engage reverse but I've only had my motorhome a few days so maybe theres a way round this.

That is because your supply is wired via the reverse light switch. The remedy is to find any ignition controlled power source (usually found in the fuse box) and supply from there.

Reversing camera ?

A quick question regarding a reversing camera,it's a Brigade BDI fitted in my camper,it works then it dont, checked the fuse and the wiring ?? anyone had any problems similar and sorted it ?
Otherwise whats a good cheap practical system,i can get off ebay or similar, thanks.

My system is a Waeco and it works when the reverse is engaged but there is a switch on it that allows it to be on continuous. The monitor is the RVS750

We had an intermittent fault last year and it turned out to be the cable. The wires inside are very fine and can break causing the picture to come and go. The only cure is a replacement cable.

A totally black screen but you still have sound, could be the back-light in the monitor. This is a common fault with the older type units. We have just had our old monitor replaced by the new one because of this fault.

Thanks for your feed back so far but in law if we had an accident how do they legally seperate a camara image a sat nav and a television or computer screen.we all know that our intention is for the safety of our vechicle and others, but the law would probable convict of us dangerous driving if we had an accident.

If it is only capable of acting as a rear view device, i.e. replacing or supplementing a rear view mirror, I do not imagine there would be a problem. If it was wired to be able to (say) display dvd's whilst moving that might be a very different matter.

I do not know how you could wire it to be used continually as a rear view aid whilst driving without it also being available to be used to play entertainment programmes. I suppose it all depends on whether the prime driver (say the dvd player) could be deprived of power whilst the engine is running. If it could be proved that this is the case then I would hope that you would have a defence.

same argument could be used for the sat nav  and most new cars are now fitted with them my sons looks like a 32in plasma :D

i have wired mine so that it is on with the media system which incoperates the radio, this is so i can have it on as a security device when parked up on a wild site. The moiniter is removable when the van is unocupied.
I tend to agree that as it is a safety feature you would have a good defence.
With the law there never seems to be logic.

A friend of mine is a Traffic cop in the UK and he says you may have a DVD fitted capable of playing whilst in motion but the same as a mobile phone if you get caught watching or using it whilst driving you will be prosecuted and possible endorsements but if you were stopped and it was on your reversing camera and the image was the same as if it was your rear view mirror nothing would be said. This is in the UK not sure anywhere else.

Being greedy we have 2, one for reversing and one for a rear view mirror (no back window) both cameras feed into the same distribution box (stuffed under the dash) and can be switched from the monitor. Reverse kicks in when reverse gear is selected otherwise rear view is on all the time. I moved the monitor from the dash to the top of the windscreen - not obviouse from outside and a more matural place to look. I looked at the dual lens cameras to replace the OE reversing camera, but just paid £20 for an extra camera and cable... the law says the only things in the windscreen are 1 rear view mirror and a tax disc which must be in the near side bottom corner

Hmmm... best rip out the concertina blinds and furry dice then...

I think some of the laws need to be updated after all driving at 50 mph +, it's a job for the man with the red flag to stay in front. Lol!
