Retrofit a Spare Wheel?

Hi

We've just bought a 2 year old Swift Escape which we're slowly getting used to but the one thing about it that annoys me is that it doesn't have a spare wheel - just one of those stupid glue pumps.

I was wondering if it is possible to retrofit the brackets etc to store a spare under the chassis? There seems to be enough space there... Has anyone done this, know if it's possible?

Thanks

Michael

If you cannot find one then it should be easy for someone with a electric welder to knock one up,my bus came with no s/wheel but i made a rear rack for one and cages to hold jerry cans even though i had plenty room under her,may build a cage for a second one.

I had a 2013 Swift Sundance that came with the gunge / glue kit.
Never happy not having a spare wheel / tyre so looked to fit a spare. On investigation found the Ducato wheel hanger kit wouldn’t fit as Swift had utilised the space for the water tank and pipework. Ended up just carrying a spare tyre onboard as my thinking was worst case scenario like having a blow out I would have a spare tyre for my breakdown company to use.

I do hope its bolted down wherever you have it stored internal, girl killed last year with lose spare from behind rear seats.:danger:

Here's a picture of the SETUP There is cheaper on ebay but thought this might help you see if theres space left

That's the same as has been retrofitted to mine, to free up space in the garage.

my hymer came without a spare went away within a month of getting the van to portugal and had a blowout took 4 days to get new tyre from lisbon, on my return purchased a new spare wheel & tyre off e bay very reasonable, the gap they normally fitted into had been covered by the winterisation so had a frame made to fit on the sub frame never really satisfactory as it made the clearance too low i managed with it after swapping the tyre for a 195 instead of 215 but it was only as a runflat , eventually had a box fitted and rearranged my loads,

Remeber the total weight of wheel and brackets will need to be deducted from your allowance for personnel needs, ie clothes, food, water etc.

Underslung spares are a nightmare , seize up get covered in filth not an ideal scenario on the A1 on a Friday night and it raining , laid on oyur back unfastening the damn thing then having to replay the process putting the damaged one back to repeat the process getting it repaired no thanks

off for a lie down shuddering at the thought

This is where emergency breakdown cover comes into its own

My last Hymer Exsis came with a fitted spare in the garage,my insurance replacement Hobby didn't, the salesman said it was because 'commercial tyres are more durable'? I was not happy and managed to buy a spare wheel separately. My wife's care came without a spare and it suffered a blowout on the motorway so severe that even two 'gunge kits' wouldn't fix it,luckily I had the presence of mind to buy a low profile spare some weeks earlier, which was greeted with the AA man saying 'thank God' he apparently hates these spareless cars as they cause him no end of trouble. I would never venture out anywhere without a serviceable spare.
Are low profile commercial/van tyres available?

Thanks for the advice and information folks - lots to think about.
I'll have to get a good look under the van and do some measureing to see what my options are, I definitely don't want to have it inside the van but could maybe do something where the bike rack has been fitted.

All the best
Michael

Fully in agreement there. And one reason why I moved my spare from a side mounted under-vehicle carrier to a rear-door mounted carrier I had made on the Camperbus.
3 of my last 4 cars came with no spare so I bought a spare for them as don't like the idea of running without even if little change of needing one.
