Hi We purchaced a chausson allegro 94 motorhome in Feb this year from what we thought was a local reputable dealer I wont name the company yet as we are still looking at our options as to deal with a issue we have regarding the warranty. When we was looking to buy the motorhome I noticed the large window on the roof at the front of the van had a small crack around a small rubber gromit,so I ponited this out to the salesman and he said it was nothing to worry about as it was only because sombody had closed the blind on a hot day and that has caused the crack and it would not get any worse.Any how to cut a long story short it did start to get worse so after 8 weeks of receiving the motorhome we decided to report the problem to the seller. No problem he said I will get in touch with our warranty company to sort it out.So after pictures Emails and serial numbers over 5 weeks I got a call of the seller this morning saying that the window is not covered under warranty. When I asked to speak to the salesman who sold us the motorhome he denied having the conversation with us.I know we should have had him put it on pen and paper but you dont expect to disbelieve the salesman.Anybody had similar problems with dealers and how did you resolve it?

Hi Jeffmossy.

Couple of weeks after we got our van we got a lot of rust forming on one panel. Took it back and on inspection it was a prior repair that had been done to a very poor standard. Not covered by warranty but as a show of good faith they redid the original repair and resprayed at a very good bargain price.

Was the dealer in Wakefield??

In my work, before I retired, I had a need to be able to record conversations. Now that we have storage media that does not need a motor to run, modern recorders are excellent. I now try to remember to record all conversations that I may rely on later.

You don't need a specialist device...your mp3 player or mobile phone will have a record function.

Most of the time, I do tell people I am recording because I would rather they be honest about what they say. There have been a couple of time though when I wanted to demonstrate to a third party the poor quality of a member of staff.

It might sound OTT, but I tend to be very cynical about what people tell me - their motives are different from mine. Like wild camping, I learn to following my judgement about when and where.

Legality: my understanding is that it is not obligatory to inform people of a conversation being recorded if at least one person is aware that it is being recorded and if the recording is for personal purposes, eg memory aide, and not for handing to a third party. I am not a lawyer, however.

The motorhome is only 4 years old.94 is the model number not the year the motorhome was registered.Btw we payed well over £30000 for the motorhome .

An "Chausson Allegro 94" i think is the make and model number of the MH not it's age?

If you cant get this done under the warranty and dont want to get a new one try this mine is 11years old and i had the same problem with my roof vent a small crack in the corner and a Spanish friend showed me how to fix it first make sure the plastic is clean then with a hot glue gun run it along the crack then when it was cold and dry gently cut the glue away if you got to much on the plastic mine was done 4 years ago and not moved. and in the heat we get here in the summer well pleased. hope this helps. ken

If there is a warranty then wouldn't there be a document setting out the terms of the warranty

I would imagine a warranty company will suggest you slammed and broke it, you'll then need to prove you hadn't and it was damaged when you bought it, the dealer may infect be your best form of help in this.

The OPs story sounds familiar, I thought they would say the dealer was based in Wem, Shropshire. Those proxy Warranties don't cover everything, and if the component is covered they have a "fair wear and tear" policy which they fall back on to limit their liability. Also, if you report a defect to them which is covered they give you just 14 days to get it fixed or forfeit your claim....try getting a Caravan Fitter to fix a fault within 14 days, they're usually booked up for at least a month at this time of year. You have to jump through a lot of hoops to get any action from those insurers. Insurance companies always take the Brolly away when it starts raining.

similar experience at possibly same dealer

Several faults listed and some corrected. Major problem has been a leaking calorifier. To give them their due the vehicle was apparently repaired but the leak was still there but only noticeable if parked so that the dampness showed rather than soaked away via drain holes. Have just ordered a new unit that I will fit myself (purchase price £228 cf a fitted estimate of £460 + vat by the above mentioned repair outfit in Preston). They allege frost damage though I know the system was drained and the problem antedated the severe part of last winter.

warranty items

I have had lots of experience at trying to claim on aftermarket warranties! Its a royal pain..Any items they know to be common faults - not covered, lots of items they class as wear and tear, it goes on. I used a garage for a car with problems that if they new the fault would not be covered they would say it was something else that was likely to be covered of a similar value and claim for that instead to cover my costs. I suppose it depends on how helpful your garage is??
I spoke to trading standards re verbal and writen contracts recently and they said there is a new law that covers deals done by word of mouth and they are now binding, however you have to go through a long winded letter writing process giving dates to rectify the problem by.
Try putting your complaint in a letter to the MD of your dealer and cc it to trading standards, it may scare them into doing something for you?? cant hurt to try?
Hope you get sorted

reputable dealers (or not0

We bought a brand new motor home last year from what we thought was a good company only to find out after we had signed on the dotted line that they weren't such a good (large) company. The problems started the week we went to collect the van. we had a phone call to say that there was damage on the outside (a dint and scratch). How it got there no-one knows. We had problems with the salesman too.
Any way to cut a long story short over the first six months we had lots of problems and kept writing to the company including sales managers and the Company director but just kept being fobbed off. So we wrote to the finance company and suddenly we were being listened to. After only a couple more letters we were sent a cheque and offered a free habitat and vehicle service (about £2000) in compensation. Needless to say we did accept this and most of the problems have now been sorted. But it took a long time. We won't go back to the dealership if we have a choice and would certainly not recommend them to anyone. If you do have your motorhome on finance then contact them and see what can be done. It worked for us. Good luck.

This goes for ALL types of cracks, before you end up repairing the crack with a hot glue gun, drill a small hole at the end of the crack, this will stop it going any further - we do this with coach windscreens, then seal/repair.

But as others have said, push for a replacement, contact local CAB or trading standards, you'll be suprised how their attitude changes when threatened with a local court judgement against then.

Many years ago I took an Essex caravan dealer to court, it cost £27 for the small claims pack, he got the hearing moved from my home town of Northampton to his of Basildon (remember he's innocent until proven guilty), but when the magistrate found in my favour I got my mileage paid for @40p/m, a day off work, phone calls etc and the price of the original Zig charger unit which failed - so for a £390 charger he ended up paying £720!!!!

Silly man, especially as I offered to accept 50% donation rather than going to court, so really £180 became £720!!!!!!!

We ae going down the route of writing to the md and asking him his thoughts on the matter..........Will keep you informed

Just update our situation we have had no reply from the letter we wrote to the company we purchaced our motorhome off.And after a visit to our local traiding standards it looks like we are stuck with the problem as we have been told we should have got the salesman to put his words in writing. So we have learned we will never be using EMBEE MOTORHOMES BURY ever again, and they have also lost 1 sale of a motorhome already as my brother in law has gone to another dealer on the strength of the way we have been cheated. So Beware if you are foolish enough to go and buy off EMBEE MOTORHOMES BURY as you could also have a nasty aftersales shock.
