Replacement Mattress on top of existing seating??

Still new to this so make allowances!

I have a Swift Sundance 500 and the rear bed base (mattress) is made from re-arranged seating
Probably quite common

The seat springing has in places gone a bit tired (might need to get this sorted sometime but that’s probably another issue)
and I would like to improve things to make it more comfortable

I would like to put a new mattress on top of the existing “bed”
A standard size would just fit (it’s a small double) with a squashed in a bit one corner

I have already put slats across the centre space to support the existing seat-bed

Is it ok to put a mattress on top of the existing seating?

Would this work?

Anyone done it?

As its usually just me, i usually keep the rear seating in the bedding position all the time, the mattress would however fit in the front overhead, (well i hope it will, i need to do some measuring now!)
ie my motorhome is a luton type, so plenty of room up front over the front seats
 
If the mattress you would sleep on would fit in the luton. Why not sleep on the luton?

The mattress would be stored there when not in use but..
There would not enough height to sleep on it in the Luton

just foam matteress

In france we have a small cottage and have french mattress that are all foam with lovely covers on. They are so very comfortable i expect you can get similar here and in different thicknesses too, maybe something like this would be better as i think it would fold or better still roll up if need to be stored. Just a thought anyway.

We have a memory foam topper in the luton on top of original mattress :idea: and also have a spare memory foam mattress topper rolled up with some bungie straps for the rear bed which is made up with seat base as others and use the topper as a bit of extra comfort.
We sleep in the luton and tend to only use rear bed when family are with us.

Hi Libraland.

I'm glad you've posted this question because I've been considering this same dilemma myself as I too have a sundance with a rear bed made of seating cushions.
The problem is made worse because one of the backrest sections that forms the middle of the bed has a piece cut out of it to accommodate the rear seatbelt bar, making it very weak as a mattress piece and really uncomfortable to sleep on.
I've considered many ideas including a good mattress topper or mattress but I don't think either would give enough support and would be such a pain in the nethers to store away on the futon.
I'm wondering if it's worth replacing the two seat sections with a more modern foam type of cushion, mounted on top of the wood covering the cupboards underneath. Then, making a third piece that would fill the middle section of the bed which would be relatively easier to make up at night and to store.
Admittedly, it's a lot more faff than just buying a mattress.
What do you think?

Heavy Mattress

In my general naivety I forgot just how much a mattress weighs
As a trial I attempted to see how I would get on with an existing single mattress on top of the existing seating
Wow! Mattresses are heavy!, even single ones! And very difficult to manoeuvre single handed
I now think the mattress topper is the way to go
 
I don't know if your van is exactly the same as my rear lounge Elddis was. The support slats were housed in the bottom of the 'U' and were slid out from the back wall in a forwards direction to make the bed base for the double bed.

As I used the van on my own most of the time (for work), I got another small section of foam. I only pulled the slats out far enough to make a single bed utilising the new foam. Another advantage was that I could leave this in place all of the time if I wanted but I was out of the van working 10 to 12 hours a day.

It might work for you.

Have a look at a company called Rakself. They do something called a Duvalay. This is a memory foam topper and a duvet all inside the same cover which makes it like comfortable sleeping bag.
It can be rolled up as one when not in use and is light to move about. They are available at most of the motorhome shows.
They are very comfortable on top of an existing mattress. Have a look see what you think. :sleep-027:
