Friends of mine have a 2004 VW T4. It is kept in excellent order and decommissioned undercover during winter. In summer it is well used and recently returned from a long trip to the Mosel, down through France to Puy du dome and over to Mimizan and back to Ireland from Bilbao.

They are looking at European breakdown cover for the next renewal. Leaving aside issues of age, they have been looking at an AA policy, but it seems to imply that if the value of the vehicle is less than cost of repatriation, then they will not proceed.

I have checked my RAC Arrival breakdown policy for European repatriation. It seems to state that if costs of repair exceed value of the van, they will not pay, but doesn't seem to rule out repatriation.

It would appear prudent to get a written explanation of what a policy actually covers before purchase.

What cover do others have and with which companies with reference to this scenario? Or do you have experience of this type of situation?

Can anyone give an estimate of the sort of cost of a privately funded repatriation from, say, the south of France back to the uk or wether there is a useful website to get quotes for such an eventuality.

On the forum where they claim to have Fun, one member, based in Devon, paid something like £8,750 for a return to UK from Spain, IIRC, about 18 months ago. I think the initial estimate was about £7,500 and after lots of toing and froing involving Frankie [French citizen who acts as translator and liaison officer who is willing to spend hours talking to garages to resolve problems, Gawd bless her], there was a move of garage, a delay, then the higher quote, and eventual repatriation!

Shiply transport.
It is a site where you put items that you need moving, then many transport companies will bid for the work, t is usually done as a back load, from someone with an empty wagon, or space on a wagon.
We recently had an Ambulance taken to Dumfries from Huddersfield for £100, as the driver was passing with an empty space on his way home, which was about 5 miles from where it was going to.
It isn’t just trucks and vans in the uk that are on the site but all over Europe.

Try speaking to AIB. I Do know they recently changed their breakdown provider to a better one or at least that is what they told me. They may be able to advise on a suitable policy though. I'm not sure I would want to be without it on a 21 year old VW or any van for that matter.
