Hi we have just bought a leisure battery and it says 'important remove bungs'. We have no idea what a bung is. Can anyone help by telling me what a bung is and where to find it

The only 'bung' that I have ever seen is one that is temporarily inserted into the end of the small plastic breather tube on the side of a 110ah battery to prevent acid leakage during transit. Once fitted into the vehicle, this breather pipe needs to be open to allow for the escape of gases created during the charging process.

Just another thought ... are they mistakenly calling the red and blue terminal post covers 'bungs' (as opposed to 'caps')?

I agree with VeeDub. Mine has a bung in the side of the top section which has to be replaced with the breather tube which vents the battery outside the van.

The last battery I fitted had 2 rubber bungs on the top edge on each side near the terminals. As the others have said they are to stop acid leaking out when it is being delivered and fitted.

It sounds like it might be an Elecsol battery that you have bought.

You remove the bungs and insert a tube into each one that is vented outside the van. I fitted an Elecsol to my last van but never bothered with the tubes as it was in its own compartment which was isolated from the hab area and had a dropout hole below the battery.

If a battery gets overcharged, it starts 'gassing' and gives off Hydrogen gas which is highly inflammable (I once had a big battery explode after it was mistakenly left on charge all weekend at work). Most modern motorhome chargers never get the battery into this condition, so the chance of it happening to anyone is very small. If your charger develops a fault, it is possible to have a catastrophe. :scared:

Maingate - I think that YOU may have just solved the problem of truly Green Wilding!!! ... Following the gist of your post - if we all encourage Canalsman to include Curry-Houses in his database then - with a bit of plastic tubing, a smidgeon of Vaseline and a compliant partner then I could re-fit the Van with Gas Mantles AND top up the Poopane Bottle for the morning Fry-Up!!

You should be on EggHeads:bow:!

Brilliant!!!

Why do we restrict our requests for stopover to Pubs? Maybe we should open our horizons to other organisations that have car parks.

Just a thought

The next time I am on Walney Island, I will make sure I do not publicise it in advance. There are some local nutters by the sound of it. :lol-049:
