In certain areas of Scotland local residents will try their upmost to deter over night parking by motorhomes ,some will try to intimadate you with home made signs etc .
How do we stand regarding the law ,probably better than you may think.
This is a reply i gave regarding Stairhaven a place for many years i used to overnight in before the area got populated with more houses .
This is my understanding of the legal issues....quote

We stayed there in Sept 08 and had a quiet night but on leaving in the morning we noticed a shiny new sign that informed "Picnic Site" lower down was "no overnight camping" in smaller letters,,, good job we didn't notice it the night before

No over night camping signs in Scotland dont mean a thing, The scottish act of parliament over rides any such signs giving people the right to camp, unless due to any serious problems caused then the local council can enforce a bylaw ,in which case the sign is required to display such information, any sign just stuck up by any Tom Dick or Harry means nothing .
From what i have been told over the years things have changed at Stairhaven and many other places too some residents dont want motorhomes overnight parking.
BTW the freedom to roam act only covers camping in tents which is peoples right to do in any area not covered by a local bylaw, however it does'nt cover vehicle camping unless it is used for the purpose of a disabled person giving the equal rights to camp.
The act does'nt help us with motor homes much although it does confuse things a little,But i believe it has created the problem of road side camping and all the rubbish they leave behind,i dont think it gives us equal rights ,but we do have the right to overnight park which is subject to parking restrictions in certain areas.
I also think the freedom to roam act has made things much worse for us ,as the actions of the tenters spoil things for all of us.
I think it would be good if we understood our rights which comes in handy when a local trys to move us just for the sake of it.
If there is anyone with good knowledge of these matters perhaps you could simplify what our actual rights are.
I think old bylaws previous to the scottish act are over riden although iam not certain.
