Do you need to use a marker board for a rack mounted ultra box whilst travelling abroad, or is it just bikes which the requirement for. I guess , yes.

It depends where you are travelling to. The red & white stripes aren't a requirement in France but I believe they are in Spain.

Hi.
I have my spare wheel mounted on the back of my van where you have a cycle rack and as i understand the LAW ??, if you have anything that protrudes beyond the rear of your vehicle then you need a marker board, others may convert this differently but for the brice of a board and a couple of bunggy straps its not worth the hassle, stick a board on the back, turn the key and enjoy your travels.:fun::drive:

I'd agree with Kens advice Boards less than £10 on ebay. I did have a quick look and seems different countries different requirements Italy even stipulating board is aluminium.

This from CC site - In Spain and Italy any overhanging loads must be indicated by a square panel measuring 50cm x 50cm with reflectorised red and white diagonal stripes which can be purchased from many stockists Panels are available in aluminium and plastic and in Spain you can use either however, in Italy the panel must be aluminium.

I would agree also. A board on the back if anything protrudes out from the main vehicle! Got it covered then eh?

Marker Boards

Spanish Law states that "if the load (ladder ,bike rack ,Box etc) protrudes more than 10% of the vehicles length than a marker board is required ie 6mtr van can have no more than 60cm overhang. The Aluminium boards are required but you will get away with the plastic ones with the reflectors in the corners, the important thing is to have a board fitted and you wont draw attention to yourself.

I already have aboard, but legally for this country I understood that anything over 1 mtr must be marked and illuminated at night, not that it is relevant here.

Correct Rocky, I believe that is 1 metre from your rear lights?

You only need a lighting board with the reg.number on it if the load covers the rear number plate. The square marker board is sufficient as its reflective anyway.
