I think there are a few of us on 'ere:D. I have been licenced since early 2005. Not very active though now. I Sometimes take a radio with us in the M/H a Yaesu Ft 857 HF/VHF/UHF with a Heil Traveler headset so as not to annoy HID. Listen in to the coastguard/lifeguards when in Cornwall etc while she goes out shopping :D

Always used to have CB rig in my M/H, great for getting info from the locals on where to go and questions like "Does this 6' 6" width restriction mean I'm going to get stuck or is it just to put the tourists off?":D

May be worth pointing out to those unfamiliar with the facts that surprisingly it is not an offence to use a CB/Ham radio while driving (handheld microphone) unlike hand held mobile phones  Obviously Plod would have something to say if he thought you were driving with out due care and attention:)

I think you might not have realised that using a hand held microphone whilst driving, or having anything in your hands that is not 'a vehicle control device' is illegal. I refer you to the case of woman in Bournemouth who was convicted of 'Not being in proper control of a vehicle', because she was eating a chocolate bar at the traffic lights. Petty, I know, but the wrong 'Plod' at the wrong time and you find yourself with points on your licence and a good few quid down! If your local police are having a 'crack down' on mobile phone users, they will be looking for any excuse to nick you under this act! After all, someone has to pay for the 'Evo's' and 'Scubies' that they are now using!

I may be wrong but I think there is a specific exemtion to cover the use of an hand held microphone

Mobile phones have a seperate offence of " Using a hand held mobile phone whilst driving"
Other equipment is covered by the older offence of " Driver not being in proper control of his vehicle"

points to prove; Mobile phone....He had it in his hand

points to prove: other devices.... More complicated you have to prove what he was doing was and did or could effect his driving. he would argue in a straight line on a wide road he was always in control of his vehicle and only a court would decide.

Came accross John G4GMO on another thread a few days ago:cool: not far from you too (Herefordshire)

I struggle with CW (Morse Code) It is still used quite a bit but is no longer a hurdle to obtaining an advanced (full licence) the requirement has been dropped. Good to see it used and even some of the younger ones participating and keeping it alive:)

Good point Channa, but still a nickable offence! The point being 'Is it, or is it not an offence'. I used a 'vox' unit whilst driving, but you had to keep talking or it would 'de-key' when you paused in mid sentance. There have been convictions, according to a CB magazine I read some time back. That is why I got the vox. I think the lady with the chocolate bar conviction was very petty. There must have been more to it than what was reported in the local rag!

Radio equipment i.e CB or amateur radio does not fall within the remit of the mobile phone legislation and on that basis you would not receive a CU80 endorsement 3 points and 60 quid fine

The reasoning is that taxi drivers emergency services etc require the aforementioned to function.

If plod were of the opinion that the older offence of 'driver not in proper control of vehicle' whilst using a CB or amateur radio set applied, then yes you could be 'nicked'

Either a £30 fpn or court appearance !!!

Using a Cb in itself or HAMset is not illegal in its own right, it is if the use of such, rendered an accused 'not in proper control'...this is really the knub of it all

Hence the reason Choccy bars or the healthy option of eating an apple whilst driving could potentially result in a prosecution.

OK, I'm a lot happier now! Perhaps I will dig out my old CB and pop it into the camper after all. I am really not sure if the old 27 fm is still being used or has the later 'mid shift' taken precedence? I have both. All I need is to find a twig on a gutter mount and an SWR meter!....Anyone?

Hi Channa, thanks for clearing that up:D

I did not intend to rip the lid off the worm can:) "Simong" asked if others used CB. Thinking about it they can be useful to M/Hers. The Actual summary of the exemption is on the Ofcom website I downloaded it once, if anyone can find it on the website then they're having more luck than me.:(

The Exemption also covers the handheld PMR 446 personal radio's (if you want to add a hands free kit it's up to you). How often do you see "Top Gear" journalists using them car to car? The Beeb would be in deep dung if seen to be braking the law:D

I have "worked" John several times, and also most other "locals".

I might just get a small Jap. transceiver and go mobile with a whip.

GM0 AVR Shetland Islands

FT-1000 MP is the home rig and an IC-735 for mobile/maritime, moved house 15 years past and only been on air a few times since, at the old QTH had a 60ft mast with a TB3 Jaybeam tribander, 7.05 mhz vertical, and a few dipoles, 2 mtr beam and verticals,

at this QTH have trap dipoles, 7.05 Mhz vertical, (just removed due to work on the end wall)

Fitted HF verticals to the motorhome roof but got RF into the solar panels, so have yet to sort that one out.

73s to all
