Quiet but nice in August?

We were planning a slow trip around Scotland's coast in August but work has sqeezed the available time window so we only have 10 days. We are looking for somewhere 'quiet' i.e. not too many people, but 'nice'. The West Country, Peak District, the Lakes and most of the south coast are probably out. Any thoughts? What about central Wales, Northumberland, Yorkshire? Travelling from Camberley and wild camping.

I wouldn't rule it out. I've just returned from a 12 day jaunt around Scotland heading up through Yorkshire, up the east coast, across the northern coastline (stunning) then south via part of the west coast, Inverness, Glencoe, Loch Lomond etc. Although I had an extra 2 days I spent one of these in Cumbria, dawdled in Yorkshire and on another day only progressed between Nairn and North Kessock.

It's surprising just how much you can pack into a trip so don't give up if it's something you'd really like to do!

If North Scotland is too far I'd like to recommennd Southern Scotland.
Eve at the height of summer Dumfries & Galloway, and the Borders are heavily overlooked. We have a holiday cottage near Castle Douglas and can't believe how quiet the area is. Glen Trool, Aryshire coast, Loch Ken, Massive forest park, Moffat, Eskdalemiur, Newcastleton and across to Hawick & Selkirk.
Most holiday goers seem to bypass it enroute to the north, or to Ireland.

I agree with Ste, we ended up in this region last year-big plans to travel north but due to techical problems we ended up traveling around this and then down the Northumberland coast. Lovely area and very quiet.

Thanks to kangooroo, ste and tigatigatiger - the grand tour of Scotland will happen but not this year and we will make sure to spend time in Dunfries and Galoway. In our ten days in August we plan to take take it slow and easy so the Northumberland coast is doable. Any other thoughts - mid Wales, Yorkshire Dales?
