Prostate Cancer

The Grand Wanderer

Guest
Hi Everyone,

I am attempting to climb Mount Killimanjaro next month and am doing it in aid of The Prostate Cancer Charity and was wondering if any of you lot out there would be kind enough to sponser me.

Prostate Cancer is a much neglected cancer that will affect many men during their lives. Yet there is no screening. A simple blood test (PSA) is all it takes and any man over 50 should be thinking about having one.

I have set a Just Giving Page which enables people to do donating on line and also enables the Charity to benefit from the Gift Aid Scheme which reclaims the tax from UK citizens.

Many thanks for reading this and even if you don't want to donate, please just wish me luck. Apparently only 40 per cent of those who set out, reach the summit, many turning back just 300 meters from their goal. I am 62 years of age and in good health and am busy walking as much as I can by way of training.

Regards,
Wanderer

just got back on Thursday

Hi all,
Just a quickie to say I am back from Kili.
Managed to summit at 7.35am on the 17th December.
Temperature -10C. Wind speed 15mph giving a wind chill of a further -10C so was a a tad cold on the way up.
It was the hardest treck I have ever undertaken.
On summit day we started at 00.00am and climbed from 4600 mtrs AMSL to the summit then after 15 minuits or so began our descent down to 3800mtrs AMSL took a total of 15 hours trecking and my legs felt like jelly at the end.
But what a great feeling being at the top of the highest mountain in Africa.

Here are a few photos

At the Lemosho gate of the National Park. 3200mtrs AMSL
Or you must be mad to try this.

A brilliant effort - well done and thank you! I've a good friend who has prostate cancer, an uncle with it and another uncle who passed away on Christmas Eve having just been diagnosed (ironically from a blood clot in his leg!)

I have persuaded members of another site I am active on (nothing to do with camping at all) to put their coppers aside this year to donate half to prostate and half to breast cancer. If anyone on this site wants to join in, pm me and let me know.

Grand Wanderer I will make sure that our donation at the end of 2011 goes to the same charity as you did wonders for - I admire you!

I have been wondering where to donate my "in lieu of a Christmas card" money - it will be my pleasure to sponsor you.
Wishing you the very best,
Tracey

Thanks

Hi Casper,
Many thanks for your thoughts, alas too many of us men get caught out by this creeping disease. I have so many close friends who are suffering that I just had to try and help. Whilst I cannot help them directly, to be able to promote research into Prostate Cancer helps all men. Will you thank those members on your other site for me please. I shall continue to raise funds for this charity throughout the coming year.
Regards,
Michael
