Propane usage

Just wondering how much propane does everybody use for a typical UK winter.
I have one 13kg and a 6kg, mainly used my alde 3010 heating, no fridge on and no cooking except for cups of tea, the 13 kg soon emptied, just interested as I'm long into fulltiming and need to work out the figures

we are full timers and a 13kg propane normally lasts us at least two months sometimes longer, BUT we do not have gas fuelled heating, we do cook and both oven and hob get used a lot however as we are normally on CL /CS sites we make use of electric as much as possible with electric heaters such as 120 watt tubular heaters and a couple of 400 watt "frost protectors" and often use a slow cooker or an electric cooking ring, also fridge and boiler mainly on electric unless juggling power requirements as we only have a 13 amp hook up, as you can see we have to mix power sources a bit and watch what electric we use but it saves a lot on the gas bill. I know when we had a caravan with everything running off gas one bad winter when we had no hookup we were going through gas at the rate of nearly one 13 kg bottle a week.

I get through about a 6kg bottle a month. Some heating, some cooking, some fridge. Fulltiming. Costs £9 to refill so economical over the year £200 or less.

I don't go overboard on anything. Probably what I spend on heating in winter, I use on the fridge in the summer. I have a small van and a 90litre fridge so easy to heat and run.

A good rule of thumb is about 0.1+ kg per hour for small appliances. So you get about 50-60 hours use from a 6kg bottle.

Heating

In the winter you are bound to use a lot of gas.

1 Calor is expensive consider a change to GASIT (or other) about 1/3 running costs

2 How well is your MH insulated etc

3 Does your heating system use much from the leisure battery ?

As has been posted go for EHU (sometimes) and small fan heater (or similar)

Totally Agree.....

Some very sound advice JagManx.

We are not 'Full Timers' but we did take the decision to invest in a 'Gas-It' refillable bottle with external body-mounted filling point.

It cost ~£130 which inluded a discount as a Member of Wild camping Web Site (and a 'FREE' selection of useful Continental Adapters).

'Gas-It' will assist on the telephone with your requirements and perhaps more importantly after you have purchased.
All the kit arrives together, well packed and with a pretty fast turn-around.

And if you decide to go for the 'external body-mounted filling point', then once you get over the thought of boring a hole in the side of your prescious MH, it really is a piece of 'you know what', simples.

Long-term, it's a 'No Brainer' and no I'm not an employee of/friend of/or have any connection with 'Gas-It', I'm just a very grateful past Customer.

Whilst not full timing-Yet, we do use our MH frequently all year. We went to Gasit several years a go and have NEVER looked back. The economy of refilling soon pays back the outlay. Our Kontiki came with two smaller cylinders however the height of the Gasit cylinder is smaller than a comparable Calor type so we were able to fit a larger bottle.

We have a Calor as reserve but have never used it.

Yes, having a warm MH does cost and insulating helps I put thin exercise mat in the skylights to reduce heat loss in the coldest spells, but even last week in the frost we didn't have the heating on whilst we were asleep and it was my job to leap out of bed to put the heating and kettle on!!

Feel around the MH in strong winds and find out where the drafts are coming from, around the fridge was dreadful but don't cover the floor vents, they are there for a reason!!

There are a lot of variables, last year with gas only water and space heating we used 6kg a month, but now with dual fuel heating for both van and water we use a lot less. That is in the Algarve where we are on a site with electricity. Another vote for Gasit, pays for itself quite quickly if you use the van a lot.

Hi, I have a carthago Chic 47i e line, so well winterised, I think the alde heating 3010 boiler draws 1amp, I left the heating on 24/7 at 18 degrees whilst I was at work just to keep it warm the 13kg bottle lasted about 5 days if that

Assuning the pump is set up correctly, look in the manual somewhere it should mention " take off "rate eg .05kg/hr this would mean 26 hours continuous use on a 13 kg bottle, Youthen have to factor in Fridge Hob etc andthis will give you a clue as to how long a bottle should last

I am not surprised !

18 deg is only marginally lower than a centrally heated lounge in a house !

You also have a large volume of air (winterised or not)

Heating on 24/7 again Why ?

During the day if you are out working surely 15 deg is enough
Again at night unless you have problems with freezing water switch it off.
Give it a blast for 1hour when you get up
and again a couple of blasts one early eve the other as late as possible

Up to you but you implicitly asked how to cut down !

The Alde heating is rated at about 5.5 - 6.0 Kw when on gas, so it will use a lot of gas quickly.

You can get timers for when on hookup but I don't think you can without Mains power but it is worth googling to see if it is possible. That will save you a lot of gas usage. Alternatively, turn the thermostat down further while you are out. If you are parked in a sunny spot, it can be very helpful to put a bit of warmth into the van through the windows (even at this time of year).
