would a 900amp peak with 400amp starting boost power pack be ok to start a 2.8 turbo diesel with a flat battery ?
thanks all

Well the power packs/engine starters are not meant to start a completely flat battery. If that's what you mean. I have one, as a power pack, but due to the bad weather my car wouldn't start, so the battery was down and needed a boost off the "power pack". It only has a 17ah battery in it, but did the job! And I think most of the budget ones only have 17ah batteries, so one with a larger battery to help start a 2.8 diesel would be needed, IMO.

anyone else got any views on this lark.
do not be afraid to voice your opinion.
thanks

Just wondering why you need one for starting a flat battery  Having been stuck a few times in the past with a flat battery I always check I have a reasonable battery before we set off on any long trips.

Your battery (unless completely knackered) will have some charge so any boost from one of these power packs will usually help, biggest problem I find is the glow plugs take a load of power making whats left not enough to turn the engine over.

Also found that some of these cheaper power packs don't last that long before they stop holding any charge.

How about taking your leisure battery off and jump starting from that?? Most of them are able to be used as temporary starter batteries these days.

Its not surprising really as they are just re-badged starter batteries! Because true deep cycle batteries are a different construction and cost the earth, several hundred pounds.

Paul **** give it a break, you have already made your point re batteries and shared your guidance that we are all mugs and conned.

how does your post assist the OP ? I play about a little like others but at least let the question be answered before foccin about ****.

Because I think people should be made aware of the reality as far as possible and suspect some people have hidden agendas in keeping the leisure battery myth alive! And this is a different thread so just perhaps this is new information for people to digest! Because I suspect people do not read every post that is put up. Remember information is power. Literally!

Tony, there is no substitute for a good battery. I am sure your power pack will be ok, the secret is to get a fast motor spin After the glows extinguish. Then treat your self to a new battery, as big as you can fit. Also a thought, meter out the glows just to make sure they are up to it. Also, is the engine oil grade correct?? Cold diesels take a lot of amperage to start if really cold, and don't forget that a battery output is linked to the ambient temperature. Sometimes they can be only 40-50 % efficient. I usually get the wife to give me a push......Cheers Fuggs p.s. My brother in law is from Waterford..worked at the glass factory as a blower.

That's true,
Since my leisure (= a starter battery) is solar powered it is mostly fully charged ( this is when the sun shines ) I used to carry a power pack too - never used it - and it also went flat after a time. Now I have long startercables to put at the leisure if the starter fails.

i carry a 2400amp hr booster pack for my 2.8td iveco daily and that only just gets it going this 1 i have is intended for 12v/24v so will start wagons also but not with flat batterys

used it 3 times this yr already the bad weather hammers your battery because its so cold

thats the baby they very good mate belive me
it runs my inverter for 3 days solid if my 2x leisure batterys die

they are very pricey but who cares if it pulls you out of the sxit

Yes that figure of 2400Ah is just plain wrong. The cranking Amps at 12v might be 2400A, which it might be able to keep up for about 30-45 seconds before dropping considerably. My 85Ah battery weighs in about 20kg, that unit is 27kg, so by my reckoning its probably about 180Ah or less. Its rather telling that the charger supplied with it is only 1.3Ah - would take forever to charge it up from flat.

The bit that would concern me about that unit is the price, what on earth would justify it. Maybe there's some very clever electronics in it? I would love to know.

I've just found this site Numax Jump Starters - Jump Starters / Booster Packs This one is a bit over half the power output but costs less than half. Intrestingly weighs only 10kg

I wonder what the life expectancy of these units are?

My own booster has a 17Ah sealed battery in it, I wonder how many charge cycles that's good for.

I think it's Kw not Ah in the spec on the link. And on further investigation my 17Ah booster would be only rated at 204 watts, I think!

I don't know, but have seen specs for the Clarke booster and the battery can be exchanged, so are they trying to say something? The only thing is to follow the instructions and check the charge every 100 days or so!
