On a more serious note, I noticed on my trips to the dentist and garage last week what a state a lot of the local roads are in.

That joke pothole in the pic is almost a reality round here! 😜

They are on a mission here, the back road past ours is closed for the weekend and being sorted.

The council tarmaced our road just before Christmas. The gasboard have sent us a letter saying they are going to dig it up in a few weeks to renew the gas pipe.

Just as annoying as the potholes is the disappearing line markings, cut backs have meant that re-lining is being put back.
There has been a couple of times I have driven on to a turning lane and been forced to make the turn and try and turn around further up the road, which isn't always easy. On some roads the stop lines at junctions are almost non-existent.
It would be interesting to know how many accidents will have an attributing factor due to worn line markings.

A few months ago we had a Saturday night in the van parked in the garden. Around 11,30 there was the noise of a truck running, very unusual as we’re on a dead end. Had a look out and was amazed to see that potholes that had been steadily getting bigger for over a year were being filled. The technique was to shovel tar in then drive over with the truck to compact it. Obviously the repair has not lasted long!
Being unsteady on my feet I find the pavements locally are too uneven to walk on so resorted to walking on the road. Amazingly these are so rutted and potholed that it's difficult to walk even in the road. I now drive a few miles to a flat path to exercise or simply use a treadmill.

End of the budget year is close.

I've never understood this idea of having to spend money before the end of a year.
Why is it not possible to carry it over into the next financial year?
All that happens is money gets spent on often stupid and random stuff just to use the 'budget' up.

Public finances always seem a bit of a mess to my simplistic way of thinking. 🤷‍♀️

I will say no more or we'll be straying into P territory, and I'm not talking toilet threads! ;)

I reckon you got off lightly there! Our road which has slowly disintegrated into a cart track is closing for 2 weeks from Monday having sported dashing “temporary road surface” signs since it fell apart at the first sign of frost. Not all good though as it currently acts as an incredibly effect speed limiter with nobody travelling at more than about 20mph.

Sadly what you are seeing is the gradual decline in our infrastructure. Not enough investment for decades coming to pass. Thats why theres so many little holes being dug everywhere. Rather than do a big job long term repair its much cheaper to just keep patching things. The patches are poorly repaired, fall apart after a winter but the people who dug the hole have long since buggered of leaving the local council the bill to fix the holes.

To be fair we have had a pretty severe period up here with wildly fluctuating temperatures, within 1 week we went from -15 deg one night to +13 deg one day. In addition we had a period of at least 2 weeks when it snowed everyday, giving a total accumulation of about 18” to 2ft. The council had ploughs and gritters out every single day so all credit to them for that.

Our council has relinquished responsibility for local roads to Colas who now charge silly amounts of 💸 to have them maintained, but I have to say they are well kept.
