Possible free WiFi - here and Europe

It seems it's possible to get free WiFi when travelling.
BUT , there are some strings attached ... hardly surprising.

If you have BT internet in the UK you can activate something
called "Fon" by logging into to your BT account.
This allows any other people with fon to use a portion of your
hub's bandwidth when they are in range.
It's kind of "hub-sharing"

Once done , YOU can use any other fon activated hub while you
are away . Obviously , you have to be within wireless range of a fon
activated hub .
In theory , it is international with partner companies in many countries.

Coverage varies enormously ....Algarve has LOADS but where I am in Spain
has NONE

I have a friend in Portugal whose laptop has the access key for my UK hub.
So their laptop should work as if it was mine that was there.
As an experiment ,I'm going to activate fon on my hub and see what happens.

I will post again on here when I have more info ....
... in the meantime , have any other "wildcampers" tried this ?

gonna try this ,,,this week,,
just sorted mine couple of days back ,,so will let people know..
google [btopenzone search for hotspots]
should come up as a googlemap thingy ,then just scroll into area your vistiting..gives you keys etc of a scale of high low coverage etc..hope this helps..

the reason there are loads in portugal is that ZON [ cable company ] equipment comes with this activated
I have belonged to FON since it started [8 years maybe ?], BT joined , then bought a piece of FON , and now BT routers come with this activated by default I understand
Iphone can be flashed for FON , but only offered in japan

in france SFR / neuf have joined ...unfortunately you have to opt in and few people have

in spain FON have no partner , and you are reliant on members like me

fancy a trip to moscow ? wall to wall there!

in short , any motorhomer who belong to BT for ADSL and doesn't ensure that their router is FON activated is missing out on an opportunity for free wifi as they travel , especially in the UK ;even if you use another IP it is cheap and easy to join FON itself and install their mini transmitter ...I have one installed at my daughter's house in the UK to be a member

We found the Vodafone dongle pretty useless. BT openzone works for us but is a bit limited in remote areas.
