Portugal fining wild campers

Fined and moved on in Portugal. Down in the Algarve region there are a few campsites along the coast, but very few North of the A22. Going from the Spanish border out towards the West Coast one has three options, the 125 slow road through the towns; the A22 motorway; or the EN270 scenic route. Obvious choice – the scenic route. Plenty of restaurants and gas stations, but guess what? No camp sites.

We parked with several others in Santa Catarina and spent our money in the local bar/restaurant, but had a cop waiting for us when we got back to the van. On the spot fine and moved on. We headed back towards Tavira and stopped to eat at Quinta Fonte Bispo, a rural tourism place, not a camp site and no facilities, but we stayed in their 6 acre landscaped garden for three nights.

We ate in their Bistro each night and joined in with the local ex-pats for Quiz night and karaoke night. But best for me was that the whole family who own the place are Elvis mad and we had an impromptu Elvis night where we took turns singing every Elvis, Cliff, Neil Diamond and Elton John song that you ever heard of.

Cost? Well I don’t think it was planned to be so, but we spent a fair amount of money and when it came time to leave, no-one asked us for any camping fee. We drove back to pay and were told it was “swings and roundabouts”, they enjoyed having us with them, so no fee. They are not interested in promoting motorhomes yet, but they have plenty of off-road spots, and I’m sure a tenner would do if you used their Bistro.

I’d like to add them to a list of sites, but I’m not sure what category to list them as. Any suggestions? Mail me if you want to know about the EN270 scenic route, or join some Elvis evening somewhere in Portugal.

Algarve

Hi Rebel,
I've posted some time ago a list about Algarve (on a request of another member) But is has been 5 years I've been there. I imagine things has changed overthere.
Have you been fined in 'Santa Catherina da Fonte do Bispo' inland near Faro ?
(if so, I think the cop could be 'smeared')
Please have a look at the thread, and post your add-ons and corrections; so we may all benefit of your findings. have them posted under European > Portugal.
Thanks

Fined and moved on in Portugal. . . .

Since I read this it's been bothering me and it's only now I've realised why. What were you fined for? Not for wild-camping because you weren't. The GNR got round to anticipating an offence? Surely not. Why were you fined?

We were parked at Quateria ..beach end.. we went off shopping when we returned all the vans were gone except ours lol, the police had told them they could park but not camp... chairs tables washing etc we stayed on as we had nothing out side the van ,and later more vans appeared no one said anything to us....We just took out chairs over the sand douns and sat there no problem. We stayed afew more days ,I didnt think they fined you for parking .Its the camping thats the problem in some places.

Portugal - East Algarve

Hi all,

We were parked across from a co-op site, on a wide stretch of parking bay just before the roundabout. It reads as if we had just arrived, but we had spent the first night there and wanted to stay in the area for a gypsy market on the Sunday.

The scenic route is best and there are plenty of restaurants along the route. It seems that they do occasional swoops on different known areas closer to towns and you can be lucky for long periods of time. I met some that have never even been moved on.

We are heading back to Sao Bras today and will pop into the Quinta on the way. The weather has been great for nearly a month, but it's cooler today. East Algarve is much the better place for us. Far from the madding crowd.
