On our recent trip we visited Portsmouth for the first time.
The spinnaker tower was impressive, much larger than it looked on tv.
And if you’re feeling fit, you can abseil down from around 200 feet.
Look carefully at the 6th photo, and you can see someone coming down.
The naval docks were well worth a visit, and free to enter.
But the museums and access to HMS Warrior were chargeable.

We were lucky both the aircraft carriers were in dock.
Great shopping, and plenty of places for all kinds of food.
The only spoiler was the train fare from Salisbury £29.80 return each. :(

Went round HMS Victory a few years back and the historic dockyard museums. Very good. Cant say I was that fussed about Portsmouth itself though but that goes for most large towns for me. Love all the boaty stuff though being a bit of a salty sea dog :D

I think I posted before Barry, when we were being shown around the Victory as kids the guide pointed out the plaque on the deck which reads 'here Nelson Fell'. My brother said "I'm not surprised , probably tripped over that plaque" and the guide wasn't amused.

The Mary Rose is worth a visit as well.

I love anything boaty too.

Was there a few months ago, and visited the naval docks as hadn't been for good few years. Love the whole historic dock area, and old Portsmouth round to south sea. My sister moved there in mid/late 80's. She barred me and me mates from visiting about 6 months later 🤣

If you like noisy stop overs, the CR's and LR's along the B2177 up on the hill are perfect.

I like Old Portsmouth Mark and used to fish off of the tiny Sallyport Pier.

My dad was from near Pompey (Purbrook) and I still have a few relatives in Pompey itself. Some great old pubs there.

lovely photos there. Takes me back many years when I visited the Victory with my ex-wife
some say that Nelson said "kiss me Hardy" although others say that he said "Kismet" (fate) on his dying bed

I was there a month ago. Victory was high on my list of “must sees”. I found it a disappointment! It’s surrounded in scaffold, as it’s being “re-built”. The work done in the 70’s was so shoddy the ship is splitting in half, because it wasn’t supported enough. The front bow section is out of the scaffold, but it looks like a fibre glass model. The furniture is in the museum apart from some pieces, so there’s not much to see.
“Mary Rose” is interesting and worth a wander round.
If you have bikes you can stay at the marina at Port Solent for free, no services, but lots of cafes and bars and a cinema! Or, Chichester C&CC site is a 45 minute, 2Quid bus ride away, but it closes at the end of October.

Had a couple of trips there in late 60’s early 70’s to buy trousers from some ex army/navy shop there. You couldn’t buy flares back then but the sailors pants were flared. Had a button up panel at the front instead of a fly though but hey ho. Saved splitting seams on Levi’s and sewing in triangles of fabric to make them.
Visited a few times in later years but not for a long time now. Is Union Street still lively lol?

Back then I remember the sailors were always fighting outside the Guildhall for some reason. (instead of the dance hall) :)

Ah, childhood memories.
