Pop Tops

My daughter had one on her T5 Allen, It was quite high and made a decent sized double bed.

She had a projector installed and the wall at the higher end made a large TV screen. it was also great for looking at views from the comfort of the bed bed. She loved it. I think it cost about £7k fitted about 4 years or so ago.

I looked at buying a pop van but due shoulder injury I could not raise it ,worth checking before buying

Anyone got experience of these ?
I don't know about the one that are appearing on the bigger vans like Ducatos, but with the smaller campers like the VW Transporters there is a massive range of poptops available, in terms of price, design, features and importantly price.
If you are looking at that size of van I would suggest looking at a forum such as the VWT4T5Forum where there will be a great level of experience of lots of different types.

I did a conversion on 20 plate vw van earlier this year it was a full and professional job.Lusso Camper Conversions of Bradford put the pop top in for what was the cheepest quote for me.

We had a pop top on our Fiat Amigo. We loved it, two full-size single bunks up top, transformed a tiny van into something that slept five people, it was the same as this

Lots of Crafters for sale with pop tops these days. Great way of giving extra sleeping capacity but the cheap ones installed by cowboys need to be avoided.

i had one >30 years ago in my first brief forray into camper vans. A Mk1 Ford Transit conversion by Holdsworth with pop top. One of the vehicles I regret ever selling.

Mixed feelings. It gives you standing headroom although mine did not have the option of roof bunks. But it puts you into the crossover between camper vans and tents. Just like a tent, when the wind blows a hooley you have to keep the pop top down and live in the cramped low headroom van.

I would need a compelling reason to have one over a high top, for instance you want to keep it in a garage that a high top would not fit into.

Few years back during my landrover days...

I was going to convert a series 2a Marshall military ambulance to a off road camper (we were doing a lot of greenlaning and parking in very off road spots...

I got as far as measuring up for a Mazda bongo lift up roof (available for around £300... Complete floor section and roof ecu etc)

Chop roof section out
Fit Bongo roof
= standing room AND a handy drop down bed platform...

Bongo roof is electric lift....

Never got around to it in the end and built the transit instead...

BUT if your handy/know someone

It could be a cheap effective solution.

Stunning little camper. Love it.

I fitted a later Fiat engine and gearbox; the same block, but with a lot more power than the van engine. The lower differential ratio was offset by the engine's ability to cope.
The problem was when I started it up, I had four reverse gears and one forward gear :ROFLMAO:, it was from a FWD. I found it in a local breakers, so I had no idea; it took a long time to sort that out.
I also fitted 14" Lancia alloy wheels and Lada front suspension with disc brakes (Fiat, Lancia and Lada all had the same PCD).
With the new diff and larger tyres, it was significantly higher geared, cruising at 70mph and achieving better fuel economy once I had it running smoothly.
Unfortunately, not long after it was back on the road, it was destroyed in a workshop fire😭

Thank you all for feedback .
Mate was looking at Panama p57 . Think , from what's being said here , need to go and see

No place for solar panels on most and so small no proper loo, i find them to be just day vans.

We spent 8 weeks in the South of France, three years running in our Amigo, one young child, two teenagers and two adults, it was mainly on campsites though, but that was for the kids to be happy

One of my early experiments with vehicles was a S2A LWB ex military. Not an ambulance but a standard LWB with a hard top and rear door. That was converted as a basic camper, bench seat down one side, sink cooker etc along the other seat folded down to make a double bed. Not standing headroom or anything posh. Spent the coldest camping night I can remember on the summit of Foel Cwmcerwyn in that.

Where is that campsite I am sure I recognise it Port a Beigh by any chance?
