Police, different rules?

Apart from the fact that I wouldn't believe anything I read in the Daily Mail, you have to be very careful about judging things on the basis of only part of the story. I wasn't at the trial so I don't know what happened but he was following a suspect car when it happened, he has lost his job and he has to live with his conscience. I wouldn't like to be him - Christmas holiday or no Christmas holiday. On the other hand, he could be a complete *******..........

That depends upon whether you take into account the burglars, child molesters et al who will also enjoy time away from prison.

Are you suggesting that because the offender was a serving police officer a special set of rules should apply ?

The fact offenders get 'leave ' in the general sense is worthy of conversation.and FWIW I find bewildering.

The fact that this offender is a former serving police officer I dont see any relevance to His xmas leave over and above any other prisoner doing porridge.

( No doubt peeps will tell me )

Agreed, it was on my local telly station but the Mail was the only link I could find at the time.

Devastating indeed Dunk, as a lorry driver who used to regularly drive past your home area it really makes me think. Thankfully I cannot think of any colleagues or friends of mine who might be implicated.

Best regards, Derek.

no-one should be let out of prison for xmas for any reason and life fora life in negligent cases should be the norm, not poxy fines and bans,if it was the powers that be's family there would be justice served i bet.

Different rules

Yes Different rules, I thought his sentence was 3 years ( a Joke) not 3 years and you can have xmas with your family! Do not feel sorry for this guy, feel sorry for family of the young girl he killed.

i dont matter what you do for a living (accidents do happen ) but if you are to fault you should pay the price, as the familys will the rest of there lives.

I suspect you'll get more than 3 years for not saying 'please' when you ask a burglar to stop tying your family up and leave your house...

speeding cop

He got off lightly, can we rest assured that this dangerous driver will never get behind the wheel again? Since he was sentenced to three years imprisonment his conviction will never be 'spent' so he should never be able to get insurance. It will be interesting to see if he ever does!

yes i remember hearing that on the news, after a bottle of wine on christmas eve ,that filthy piece of ****e made me angry. What we need are some sensible punishments, sensible sentances and sensible judicial laws so our police force can do their jobs properly and see criminals and the scum locked away where they stay.If we incarcerated these asylum seekers rather than piss about with them to dissapear amongst the populous we may just get something done.
I dont know about you lot but im fed up with this nanny state of ours

With regard to the punishment fitting the crime:
The Chinese govt have just executed a man for breaking their law about drug smuggling. Lots of people around the world have condemned this as being inhumane, and have claimed that the man was mentally ill and should be excused for this crime. I wonder if these people would be so understanding if their own children had become addicted to the drug that this man smuggled, with the subsequent destruction of the childs life and personality? The man was mentally ill? Well if he was so ill he should not have been out unsupervised. What if he had smuggled 4 kilos of explosives instead of drugs, and had killed a couple of hundred innocent people? Including other peoples children? Would that have made a difference? I don't particularly like the Chinese governments policies in a lot of respects but I applaud and support them in this action. I believe that if our own government were to toughen up on criminals, and I really mean toughen up, it would go a long way towards cutting crime rates. There is too much "forgiveness" and not enough punishment. There is too little "political correctness" and not enough sense. Criminals often get more protection than their victims.

As much as it pains me to say so...after much soul searching, I have to say Here Here!!

Predicatbly I dont !!

I wouldnt for a moment suggest that the Chinese shouldnt be able to excercise capital punishment if that is what they want to do. 72 percent of all capital punishment in a global sense happens in China.

I wouldnt defend the idea either that a foreigner is exempt from their legal regime.

However I believe that in this case the person involved had a clinical mental condition ( reinforced in my mind that he thought he could be a pop star).

Therefore at the time of the offence was dillusional and arguably had a seriously deficient sense and grasp of any responsibility, even more so considered the drugs were planted.

If a person goes to China fully corpus mentus and replicates this mans behaviour I would be upset at the British Embassy even becoming involved.

And hanging , firing squad etc so be it.

The Chinese refused point blank to even consider there was mental issues, Refused medical assessments etc.

If you think this is how justice should be conducted ...then god help us !!.

Oh dear Channa...perhaps we shouldn't be going into such depths on this subject here... Please don't think that I am heartless or unthinking.
I am nurse trained...to care for, and preserve life, so I do not advocate capital punishment, and I did indeed vote against it back in the days when we were balloted in this country.
However, there are several points in this case that I are not boding well with me.
First and foremost..other countries laws, are theirs to be obeyed by all foreigners..or suffer the consequences.
Secondly,...how mentally ill was this chap???? if diagnosed as such here, he would not be allowed to hold a passport in the first place.
Disillusioned about his ability to be a pop star?? have you ever watched X Factor/..Oh dear!! there's a few disillusioned souls on that programme, but wouldn't suggest that they were so mentally defficient that they could be excused drug smuggling.
I could go on 'ad nauseum' and I think I will dip out of this debate here and now, and just agree that we must 'disagree'
Jackie ;)

The Chinese did have some compassion for the man. They gave him a lethal injection.

The death penalty in China is not hanging, it is a bullet in the back of the head.

so!! Maingate!!...you understand men VERY well, and you love dogs??? Ummmm..what shall I make of that??

Taken as literal translation from your 'underline statement' lol

Firstly, I am respectful of your opinion, And it is has valid as mine.

I agreed in my first post all countries have the right to excercise punishments as they see fit.

I am not entirely sure UK citizens are denied a passport on the grounds of mental illness. At what stage do we deny a passport ? ...mild depression. Bi polar schizophrenics etc ?

It may well have been a ruse on the part of the miscreant that he was playing the card of 'mentally unstable', I can accept that too.

What I do find difficult is that the authorities there made no attempt to establish whether there was mitigating circumstances in terms of mental state. That really is my point.

Has a nurse you will no doubt be well aware a broken leg arm etc with the benefit of an x-ray can be pretty straightforward to fix ...a broken mind is a little more complicated ?

In respect of Maingates point bullets hanging lethal injection or wet leather collars in the mid day sun ..I cant see the difference in some respects the end result is the same.
