I would like to visit Poland with the van. Has anyone been recently and how did they find it. What were the roads like. I wanted to go to Krakow and the southern region

Hello Silverweed,
We did West & S West Poland last year and we still have the same set of tyres (just !). The local drivers aren't too bad but watch out for Russian/Ukrainian/Moldavian artic HGV's. We entered on the 'main' road from Frankfurt am Oder & the main East-West German M-Way (I'm not at home & so haven't got my EU road atlas). This road is under reconstruction with severe delays/deviations (worse West bound). The road tarmac has very sharp edges (not like our verges) & oncoming HGV's will try to force you over - we found headlights, air horns full on & drive straight at them works well - but we don't have a white plastic van. Roadsigns will often disappear near towns but we found the people helpful - lean out the cab, shout name of where you want & the international sign language usually works. Yes, there are potholes but the UK is going the same way in some areas. There is a limit on exporting Zlotys (I can't remember the limit but just fill the tank before leaving Poland -- cheapest diesel in europe.). We didn't wildcamp so can't comment. If your thing is steam trains then visit Wolzstyn. The 'famous' clock at Poznan isn't much.

Krakow etc

Watch out for high temperatures in Krakow ...it s in the 80's today! Zakopane is Alpine and the wool slippers are FAB!

We had great time in late Sept last year ...also went over via Hull / Rotterdam,,,and discovered beautiful Baltic ports and great beaches in former E Germany and Poland ...

Wildcamping on the banks of Elbe at Meissen was a highlight ..This was our first M Home trip ...thought 3 ish weeks ....out for 7 weeks!!

Sounds great thanks for the driving tips. I would like to wild camp, did you think we would be able to find places. What made decide against wilding

Hi Siverweed,
I have sent a link to this page to a couple of Polish who have a campervan. We met when they were working over here for a while but are now in Bulgaria (I think). Hopefully they will be able to answer your questions.

A few years back when I was living in my home town I used to cross over to Poland. Just for your information, Poland can be troublesome. My advice is when shopping park in a secure car park, you have to pay peanuts. They have the normal car park which is free. Usually the secure car park is fenced and have security personal on duty.

We go over to Poland (Krakow and surrounding areas) every year to visit many friends. Going again for three weeks in July/August. The roads are rutted and pot holed in a lot of places but not as bad as some countries we've travelled in...... Have only wild camped in one place, just across the border of Germany in Legnica Pole (beautiful church in the village). Camp sites aren't up to much but the one in Krakow named Krakovia is not far from the tram which will take you straight into the centre of town (get out at Wawel Castle and walk through). Everyone friendly and helpful and most want to practice their English on you so no problems there. Enjoy, we always do :)

So by the sound of it it's not a good idea to wild camp there or leave the Motorhome unattended. I did wonder if it was like that but didn't want to be the first to say so

Very nice country & people, worth visiting.
Had 4 months last summer Germany / Poland via Mosel & Rhine, black forest, Bavaria, Prague & into Poland, wild camped many times as very few campsites, only used sites for water etc a few nice sites but some are very dilapidated!*
Best to stay at sites for Warsaw, krakow, which are worth visiting.
I visited auschwitz (you can o/n in the parking area) & many other camps, also salt mines, wolfs lair, schindlers factory, the lakes area, border with Russia, all the Baltic coast & much more.
There are many supermarkets many are tescos which I used.
A data card is very very cheap for your phone / laptop.
If u have refillable gas bottles LPG is everywhere.
Most main roads are pretty good, but go of the beaten track & they can be very very bad with BIG potholes etc.
Hope that helps

Regards Ian*
