POI Question?

Hi,

A couple of questions you guys might be able to help us out with.

We have downloaded the latest POI, and are wondering about the public house places,

Are the landlords OK with people using the parking if you introduce yourselves ?
Buy a couple of drinks, meal ?

Or are they OK if you arrive out of hours ?

Jane & Tony.

I usually email a few if Im planning a trip, otherwise we just go into the pub and ask. chances are they will be glad of your business and happy to let you stay. If they say no then chances are the next pub will say yes. If they are on the wildcamping POI database then I assume someone has stayed there. I often use google earth or maps to check out the car parks before visiting as well.

I wouldnt just turn up out of hours and expect to stay. I would always ask.

We have found that any pub you turn up at will welcome your custom in return for letting you stay on their carpark (provided of course that it is large enough). We have never been turned away - it doesn't matter whether the pub is on a list or not in our experience. Happy travels.

Thanks,
Barryd, John H,

Will use google earth to look first, we are going to use a couple close to where we live for a couple of weeks until our V5 turns up, and then hopefully start making our way down to Portugal for christmas all been well.

I'm always on the lookout for more pubs to add ...

The Wildcamping & POI data file has phone numbers for all the pubs - so give 'em a quick ring afore you go is the recommendation.

In addition, there are Google Streetview links that show the car parks.

We've been turned away a couple of times, most recently a few weeks ago at a pub in Sussex. We had lunch there, asked if we could stay the night as we wanted to meet up with some friends for a meal, and were told no we don't allow it. Still, it was their loss, we found another one a few miles away and they benefited by about £80!

The best plan with pubs is to phone if you can, always go in and ask, and don't expect something for nothing - at least go in for a few drinks if not a meal.

Tends to blow the budget out a lot if it costs you a meal and several drinks for a night's parking.

poi pubs

hi all we know it can be a bit costly staying on pub stopovers but we use them for a weekend away it gives my wife a break from cooking usually we have evening meal's and full breakfast friends come along or we meet people there and no worry about driving and a lot of the country pub's have a lovely atmosphere and like to ask where you are from . happy camping P.S we are not drunks we are pension-as

It doesn't have to break the bank - a couple of pints and a "two meals for £10" deal make it cheaper than the average campsite and you get fed too! And it isn't the kind of thing you do every day. As for being turned away, I am surprised to hear that there are some publicans who are not very good businessmen - fortunately we have not run into anyone like that yet. By the way, it is a very useful way of getting around Greece, where you can get adopted by the local community for the price of a not-very-expensive meal.
