Hi Folks

We are off to the Isle of Wight for Christmas (yes I know its not quite the Algarve, we havent got time to go there now!). We are going across on the 23 dec but will have 2 days to kill before we go over.

Can anyone make some recommendations of somewhere nice to visit within an hour of the Southampton Ferry? I know this is a bit of a broad request and we wont hold it against you if it turns out to be rubbish. We like nice little seaside towns or pretty villages, that kind of thing. will probably stay on a CL so any recommendations of good CL's appreciated or indeed good wild camping spots.

Also when we come back we will be touring the south coast from Southampton towards Devon so if anyone wants to share any great wild spots or CL's etc and must see places I would be really grateful.

Cheers

The obvious place is the New Forest, Its quite a special place at this time of year.Always worth a drive around but watch out for the sheep, pigs and horses wandering free. You can also drive down to the waterfront at Calshot and see the island and solent. You used to be able to overnight down there but I can't vouch that its ok now.

There are lots of sites in te forest, the CC and the CC&C have some very good sites but they can be pricey. We often go to see family down there and stay at Caron campsite
Carron Caravan And Camping Site Reviews, Nomansland Campsites

Its quite cheap and there is a good pub within easy walking distance. Its quite basic but good enough for a couple of nights as a base to look around.

On your way to Devon there is, of course, the well noted Exmouth together with Dawlish and Teignmouth. All motorhome friendly. A good picnic area (aire really) on the A35 before you reach Honiton is a good overnight stop if it fits your itinerary.

Avoid Torbay except Saturday night/Sunday when you can park on the seafront in Torquay without restriction. Beware over-zealous NCP wardens here.

Many more wilding spots on the wild North Devon coast.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks chaps, I heard there was an Aire at Dawlish Warren? By the sea with proper marked out bays not sure if this is what you are referring to. Never been to Exmouth, Dawlish and Teignmouth or Torbay but they are now on the list. Depending on when we leave we may do the New Forest before or after the Isle of Wight. I want to see HMS Victory, Bucklers Hard and the National Motor Museum so may hunt out some CL's in that area and the New Forest either before or after the week on the Isle of Wight and then bumble our way along the coast as far as Torquay before heading north up to Ilfracombe area and then home. Reckon it will take two to three weeks and I may actually have some work in Devon at the beginning of Jan so it could tie in nicely.

The Postal museum looks riveting *****! Sure Mrs D will be enthralled! Then again she might find it more interesting than the Motor Museum but hey, Im driving so hard luck.

Remembering an earlier posting by you about liking to be alone in quiet places you may not like dawlish warren, its a proper seaside area with holiday villas and theme pubs. Dawlish itself is a short bike rideaway which is very nice.

If you get a chance on the way home try to stop near us and we will comeout for an evening / overnight to say hi :)

Cheers for that. Yes your right, we do prefer to be somewhere quiet. We have the scooter on the back so prefer to park somewhere a few miles from the "action" and scoot about. As its down south, presumably shorts and T shirts will be the order of the day then.

Will definately look you up on the way home if we come your way.
