Yes this is a common problem, look here for some good photos of the problem and the cure. Changing Dash Lamps in the Peugeot Boxer 1.9ltr Diesel Engine Intercooler Van Page 1

I also had the problem but it was much worse than the x member. In short there are a couple of main reasons the x member rusts, 1 is not so bad and 1 can be a big problem, I unfortunatley had the second. Both are caused by the same design fault.

  1. Water runs down the screan and because the lip on the plastic moulding at the botton is too small water floods over into the engine bay, if the van is tilted to the drivers side it is worse as the water should flow to the passenger side and down through the heater inlet.
  2. When the water floods over it runs down the engine bay and out over the x member but also into the x member as it has some holes in the top. It then rusts inside out.
  3. The worst thing that can happen is if you have replaced the battery with a none sealed type as water runs over the top of the battery and causes it to flood over. The acid runs over the inner wing and also into the xmember and rots it all.
On mine I had number 3 and had to do a lot of work on the inner wings and all around that side including replacing the xmember. Make sure you get it all checked out, I do hope you don't have this problem.

A new x member is about £100 then it has to be fitted which is quite easy to do. Make sure its well painted before they fit it and it will last.

I have stopped any further reoccurenace by fitting a boot seal onto the lip. I noticed in AJ'S which is a newer model, that they had fitted this, I also fitted a cover onto the battery.

Mine had the exactly the same problem when i bought it,just six bolts to undo and a couple of plastic clips for the wireing and its off.....this happened on mine when the radiator leaked on the last owner and it fills up the cross member and cannot escape so just roots away quietly !!!!! got a second hand one from a friend which was thankfully in one piece still, cleaned it up and sprayed it with a two pack epoxy paint and then clear coated it and now looks better than a new one at a fraction of the cost :D would not want to know what a new one would of cost so i never looked into it :) it is not part of the MOT structure but mine was so bad that if i would of needed a tow it would of pulled the towing eye off of the MH:rolleyes:

Oh yeah forgot the cost a new X Member is about £100 and then needs to be fitted. As said its just six big bolts underneath.

Make sure they or you paint it and waxoil inside as they come not painted other than a thin coating.

be carefull to as the bolts are 15mm socket and get a little tight to undo ;) if you alternate each bolt in turn so they dont get to hot it should be o.k :) as said make sure you cover the inside :D
