On Sunday we spent our last day of our trip in Peterhead.
Originally we were going to finish in Montrose, but we had a change of mind.
First we went to Peterhead Prison Museum, and I reckon many in here would enjoy a visit.
I opted for the guided tour at £12 pp plus a booking fee of £1.20.
I selected the 1pm visit, and we were taken round the prison by its CEO Alex who was excellent. The whole trip lasted three hours, and terminated in a coffee in the refuge cafe.
After three hours of walking about listening to the history and the events that took place here from 1888 till it closed in 2013 I was ready for that coffee.
If you prefer you can do the the usual audio tour heading from one numbered point to the next.
This costs £10 and you can turn up any time and pay at the entry point.
Word of caution for members with large vans with large overhangs.
Beware of the raised areas behind the small parking bays, our PVC just cleared this raised area. I am thinking of contacting Alex about this issue.
If in doubt I would park elsewhere.
Peterhead prison was Scotlands only high security prison, and the stories you will hear are eye watering.

Any teasers?
It would only spoil what is an excellent trip. A bit like someone telling you all about a movie you are about to watch. Honestly it’s right up there with the very best museum experiences I have ever had. Only the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart beats it for me. ButI cannot recommend strongly enough doing the guided tour with Alex. Ok then one, the best bit is at the end.

We visited Peterhead Prison a few weeks back and I also recommend it - what a fascinating, if somewhat sombre place. I didn’t realise the special terminology but officially it was a “convict prison”. That is where prisoners have to do hard labour, in this case working in a quarry to provide material for Peterhead breakwater.
If you can follow the visit up with a trip to the Dolphin Restaurant right on the harbour with views over the fishing fleet for superb fish and chips all the better!
Somewhat bizarrely there is also an RNLI lifeboat museum within the prison grounds!

That sounds like an ideal way for our scrotes to spend their waking hours, plenty of hard labour and no PlayStations, iPads etc.
