Pet passport legality

If this is the case why are they allowed to sell dogs cats from europe that come with a pet passport, there are enough dogscats in this country in shelters that need rehoming,
Yes our sidney has a pet passport from greece but we didnt purposely pay a courier to import him into this country we went to greece on our travels and got a dog whilst there,
And it was only a few weeks ago that a similar newspaper was reporting that the uk would join the pet passport scheme again

”Elizabeth Mullineaux, the senior vice-president of the British Veterinary Association, says EU guidance states that the European pet passport – for dogs, cats and ferrets – is only issued to pet owners who are resident in the EU”

It isn't true, note the word ”guidance”. Pet passports are legal documents for entry to the EU. See below, from the gov.uk website.

However, from a date in, I think, April 2026 (although I heard anecdotally that it has been delayed), anyone trying to get one will have to show residency in the country. Until now, some countries haven't had that requirement.

So it may be that it is just poorly written than scaremongering.

On 21st April EU vets are no longer allowed to issue pet passports to non EU citizens, it's unclear how this affects UK citizens who already have a pet passport issued in the EU , we will have to wait and see what happens at the borders after April 21 st

I have read that if you have an EU issued passport, you can continue to use it. Have you seen something that suggests that's not the case?

I have read that also on various online sites but also read the contrary, there is nothing anywhere from an official source confirming one way or another, will have to wait to see what happens at the ports in April unless something confirming things is realised, we not going away until July so will know by then

We should have been sailing from Newcastle to Amsterdam tonight but Timber dog isn't well so we have postponed our crossing until the autumn. If we had been able to go, we perhaps would have been able to get answers.
