Just got back from 10 days on the aires around Holland. First night at Flatford Mill (thanks Canalsman). Posted a query a few weeks ago about pet passports, 'eres me update.
We ended up in Goringchem at vet time and called at the tourist centre for a pointer to a vet (pun intended), well my wife did. I was looking after the object of our attentions. She came out a few minutes later with a booking for a local approved vet. We visited that afternoon and after a quick check over, administering the medicine and stamping ze papers we were only 18.50 yo yo's lighter.

They are Direnziekenhuis Gorinchem, Grote Haarsekade 121, 4204 VL Goringchem.
0183-62 46 37.

So you get the pet passport when in the foreign country, not in order to go there?

What do you need with you - vaccination records etc.... or nothing?

Hi done this several times you only need the passport to get back into the uk ,but your pet ie dog will need to be vacinated aganst rabies and a second blood test taken six months after the vacination to find out all the rules and regs regarding pet passports you can go on the DEFRA web site .hope this helps , i am assuming you pet is a dog and it has been chiped just look under pet passport scheme.

Just to add that if you take your dog's worming tablets and tick treatment with you in unopened boxes the Vet will use that; could be cheaper than letting the Vet provide the treatment. They will then stamp the Pet Passport to the effect that the treatment has been carried out
You then have 24 hours in whcih to catch your ferry.
Note that the further away from the Ferry that you are, the more reasonable the Vet costs.

If you are in France Pages Jaunes is a good way of finding a vet.

Also, this business of tick and worm treatment only applies to the UK. It was due to end in 2010 but looks like the Gobernment will try and get the EU to extend it for a further year. One wonders if they get a back-hander off the Vets and the Drugs companies.

We took our own treatments which helped the cost. Stena line took it all very seriously (more seriously than the state of their kennels) and did all the checks at Hoek V H.

I heard about the passport coming to an end and asked the Government about it. Seems it's just the ratification up for renegotiation and the UK system will not change. Not surprising when it's a licence to print money.

i disagree with that . i think it makes sure we have a rabies free country and we are lucky some european countries want vaccines every year. our uk pets passport is very cheap and is ideal .my dog may have been one of the first to leave we left before the scheme came in but she was prepared ready for it to start . and as been away just about every year since . a good pet owner always tries to keep their animal up to date with whats needed . even the blood test as got cheaper as time goes by.
cheers alan.

I don't disagree with the system, just the vast amounts charged for the admin...

can you tell me what admin you mean . .get two rabies jabs30-50 quid . a blood test 56quid thats it and the chip about 15-20 quid . possibly free if you have a visiting peoples dispencary for sick animals van in your area. used to be 70 odd for the blood test . its not expensive . i pay about 25-27 euro in spain for the spanish vet to give a health check and worm tick treatment . you can get the rabies abroad cheaper but i like to keep it all uk based . .at first the jabs lasted 1 year later 2 years ,now three years so its only bout a 10qid a year . 4 pints if you are lucky. cheers alan.

The bit I was interested in is about the tick and worming treatment: That does seem to be an unnecessary on-cost - any ideas?
