Welcome to the PENIS 287, the best driving road in the world according to the holy trinity. The PENIS 287 is a circular route from Inverness, following the A838 in its entirety, before following the...
I have a very old AA booklet that my dad had from the 50s it’s vehicle tours of Scotland and all of these routes are mapped in the booklet long before they were given silly names.
What irritates me is these so called routes are set up, nothing is done to improve facilities or infrastructure, and when they become overused guess who ends up being portrayed as the bad guys. It’s the same with road tariff equivalent ferry fares. The islanders campaigned for reduced fares to reduce their costs and to help stimulate business. Then when their inadequate road infrastructure and lack of facilities are put to the test the usual culprits who campaigned for the cheaper ferries are first to complain, and they vent their fury mainly in our direction. Prime culprit was Mull who were not on the initial list of islands to be covered by RTE.
These routes attract many from Europe who read about such routes and turn up in large numbers to use them. Many of whom being unaware that the facilities they take for granted in Europe are not available here.

Not sure if near your route but i use these 2 campsites regularly when up the west coast. Just google them for info.
Melon Udrigle campsite. Very basic, no ehu or toilets / showers but beautiful locations with a fabulous beach.
Port A Bhaigh campsite, overlooking the summer isles. Small family run site with all facilities including a shop.
