Pendle hill

Good afternoon folks

I have not been here for quite a while ( over 12 months ) and this forum has really grown , I still see lots of familiar names so the site admin must be doing something right .

Due to the death of my wife last year I had to sell my merlin and end all my plans for future camping trips .

Anyway enough of all that negative stuff, I am halfway through converting an old MK3 transit to a very basic camper so when I attend the vintage shows I will have somewhere to sleep .

I have been asked by a friend if I would fancy a walk up Pendle hill in the dark and I thought , " Why not "

So this would be a great chance to test out the transit for the first time and now I need to know the best place to start the walk up the hill from .

So here is my question

What is the nearest village I can stop in to walk up the hill ,

What I need is an idiots guide because I have never been near the area and I havent got a clue

Pendle Hill

Hi Steve,

I live just below Pendle Hill in a Village called Sabden, and have walked it myself many times (although not sure I would fancy it in the dark!!!:eek::eek:)

Not really sure if there is anywhere in the actual village you could park (there is a car park in the centre of the village - I will check out the board for you regarding overnighting)- I think the best bet would to park and start your walk from the nick 'o' pendle about 10 - 15 mins walk up from the village. I do see quite alot of MH parked there on my way to work so I don't think they have a problem, also there is a number of good laybys you could use. Alternativly you could check with The Wellspings Mexican which is also at the starting point as I have also seen MH overnighting there too.
Most people start the walk from the nick 'o' pendle and it is a good path up to the summit - from there is should take you 3 - 3 1/2 hours for the circular route back to your van.

Please contact me if you would like any further information
Rachel :)

Pendle Hill

Hi
I don't live as close to Pendle as Rachel does - but know it well enough. There is a possible MH site on the way up to Sabden from the Padiham side. Coming from the direction of Padiham or Accrington (closest to the M65) follow the signs for Pendle and the road winds up the side of the hill until you get to the top overlooking Sabden.

Right at the top of the hill is a signpost to the left for a picnic site. Don't try and get into the picnic site - local authority have placed a barrier to discourage high sided vehicles into the site.

Carry on past the picnic site and you end up at a very convenient pull in set back off the road a bit. It's very quiet and has stunning views back across the valley on one side and off to Pendle on the other.

You could then drive up to the Nick - as Rachel suggests - and then do the walk from half way up the Nick - good parking on the right as you start to climb up the road to the top of the Nick.

Hope the weather keeps fine for you - beautiful today - but in this area it can change every half hour!!

cheers
David

Thanks David

I thought you would have been more local to me with a user name like that .

Your not wrong about the weather David!! lol:rolleyes:

Yes I know the spot you mean - would be very good and makes the walk longer too.:):):)

We took our trip up the hill yesterday and we were very lucky with the weather

We did get a visit from the local constabulary while we were eating fish and chips in the layby .

Now my van looks like it could fall apart on the next speed bump so I allways get odd looks ,as if I am a chav on a robbing trip .

She took all my details to verify I was who I said and that the lagalities of the road were in place with the van .
I told her that we were parked for the night so she radioed in so that any other patrolls who would pass in the night would not have to wake us to check we were not illegal ****** .

The village of Sabden is very nice and looking at the board on the car park I could not see any restriction for overnight parkng , But we opted for the layby at the top of the hill just before the Wellsprings Mexican restaraunt

We will be returning some time quite soon to explore more of the area but we are going to wait for the promised summer heatwave

Nick of Pendle

I once stayed in the Ski slope car park just North west of Sabden without any problems, The PH is now a posh restaurant next door.
However the carpark soon fills up in the morning at weekends with Skiers.:)

Glad you liked it!
