Paris Ring Road

I have nightmares about our last trip bypassing Paris on the Péripherique. Admittedly, it was a long time ago, maybe 30 years, in the days before sat-nav.

On our next trip, the most sensible route is via the Paris area, and looking at maps it looks like there are outer ring roads that might be easier to navigate. Has anyone been recently, and can maybe reassure me, that our sat-nav is likely to default to the outer routes?

Where are you going from and to where

Starting at Amsterdam, heading for the Spanish Costas. TIA for any advice!

Are you planning on a toll or toll free route, or perhaps a bit of both?
Anyway I think I'd look at a route avoiding Paris. Even when you get through Paris in good time, it's still a PIA.

Say, Luxembourg > Metz > Lyon > Montpellier. Thats the first alternative that springs to mind, plus the bonus of a cheap fuel fill up.

We plan our routes to aviod the Paris area and also toll roads.
We have found nice aires as well eg

Going to the North and west of Paris is not as easy as you have to cross the Seine

All depends on your timescale and modus operandi
I suspect those aiming for Spain asap will think differently

That is one of the alternatives. I should have said, this is a bit of a last minute trip and we haven’t had time to do much planning, we don’t know that route particularly well. We wanted to avoid stopping in places where we look around and ask ourselves why the heck we are even there - the reason for going via Paris was to head towards Orleans and Limoges, because we know nice places where we can comfortably stop for a couple of nights at a time and enjoy the trip.

The thing is, we aren’t landing in Calais. Your second image, via Rouen, would be more the sort of direction we want to head. The plan is to get to Spain reasonably fast, maybe over a couple of weeks, then after Easter meander back much more slowly. On the way down we don’t mind paying for tolls because we want to make that part of the trip quick and efficient.

the via Luxembourg route is almost an hour quicker from Amsterdam

Thanks, that’s helpful. It looks like my best bet is start to look for places to stop. If you have any recommendations, I’m grateful. What we like are aires that are in places where we can go not too far off route (tolls are fine in this direction), nice places where we can stay a couple of nights and chill rather than driving every day, preferably with hook up at this time of year although that isn’t a dealbreaker if it’s only for one night.
