Paragliding anyone?

Hi, my wife Jenny and myself with our two dogs Ceri the Springer Spaniel and Tsuki the miniature Poodle are often out and about in our "C" reg Talbot Merlin. It is actually our only vehicle. My hobby(obsession) is Paragliding, and occasionally Hang gliding, and I wonder if anyone else on the forum is a pilot? We will be heading into Europe again next year to fly at Laragne/Ager maybe Annecy and the Dune de Pyla, but we also will be flying in Wales where we live. Any other flyers???

Used to paraglide down in Brighton from the Devils Dike in the early 90's I'm too old and have a compressed vertibra now so can't fly anymore. It was caused by work not flying.

Everytime I see someone flying I get upset cause I can't fly anymore :(
Enjoy yourself in europe, the best place I flew was just outside of Chambery, Lucin Le Lac I think.

I only go paragliding when my kite picks me up and takes me somewhere...

Qualified in gliders with the Air Training Corps as a lad.

If I ever win the Lottery I will take it up again.

Hi, Jane keeps saying she would love to do it, she has a big Kite. Well if 3.9m is big :D I think it is, but others will say not. But every time its really windy and I think it looks fun, she packs up saying its too windy..............;):D Bob.

Hi Norris, did I read somewhere that you have to be under 60 to take up the hobby? Must say that I fancy a jump, but may be to old at 64.

Same as Biggiraffe, then later in life took lessons in a knackered old Cessna. Didn`t get as far as PPL, my money ran out :( Have flown microlites also. I`d do it again but only on odd occasions for fun. Its too damn expensive!

Hi Norris,
Yes, I love flying.
Got my PPLM about five years ago and flew flexwings, but like MikeH says, it got too damned expensive. For the last two years I've been flying paramotors and to be honest wouldn't go back to flexwings now even if I could afford it. The fact that paragliding and paramotoring is totally deregulated makes the sport so enjoyable, once you have the kit it costs just £5.00 an hour to fly, what other sport gives so much fun for so little cost?
No age restrictions btw, whoever asked.
Tried to upload you some videos, but couldn't, something about security tokens, didn't understand!
Cheers
Dave

Norris,
I'm one of the ones that annoy you - I fly mainly from the slope quarter scale gliders :)
All joking aside, I usually get on well with the duvet and tent fliers, never had a mishap (touch wood).
Cheers,
Andy

Gosh, never had so many replies!! I also used to fly RC slope soarers, Jenny still has her Zagi! I usually have a chat to anyone flying a model where I am flying, have even been known to blag a go!! I also have a paramotor which is undergoing repairs at the moment -- bad take off-- and am thinking of powered hang gliding. It is the really budget way to fly under power!! To anyone who says I would love to have a go but I am too old I normally reply Pull the lid down mate, you have died and no one told you. I am 60 and there are a few people in my clubs older than me, there are no age restrictions, and you only do it to match your physical capabilities, you don't need to be super fit unless you want to be. We have sites that you can drive too so you don't always have to climb hills, allthough it does help. There is also an organisation called FLYABILITY, which is a section of the BHPA which is dedicated to bringing personal flight to disabled people, even people in wheelchairs can fly paragliders.
I also have a small kite but I blew out a couple of cells flying it in high wind!::D
I also got a mountain bike, a kayak and roller blades:cool: I got more toys than most of the kids around here:p

Hi
We did it in Annecy for the first time in the summer and all i can say is awesome and my daughter Sophie who is 12 cant wait to do it again.
The campsite we where staying at had eurocamp also and the rep was doing his training.

I have also been up in a glider old fella from work was member of the local gliding club and took me up one day great day out.

Years ago I attempted first time round to join the Raf...I was lucky in that i had the necessary qualifications to try at least pilot training.

When I suggested I wanted to fly I was told to foc off and join Britiish Scareways!!!.

Never did get to fly Rafair !!!...

I like this idea of para motor gliding mallarkey...!!!

At a 5iver an hour seems good value ...but what is the outlay.?

Hi Channa,
You can buy second hand gear and get fully kitted out for between three to five grand, including motor, wing, reserve, helmet, radio, flying suit, if you find someone wanting to sell up. But to buy new kit (which I always feel safer in) expect to pay anything up to ten grand. Have a look on the paramotoring web sites, there is loads of second hand gear about. But talk to someone who knows before buying, the gear must match your weight!
Dave.

Hi Channa, nothing wrong with second hand gear, it's a way of getting established in the sport and finding out which way you want to develop without spending a lot of cash, most fliers keep a log book to keep track of how many hours has been done on their gear, so you have a good idea of what you are buying. If they don't have a log book I would walk away. I started out with all second hand stuff and it was fine. My paragliding gear has gradually been changed for new, although I bought my paramotor and wing for £1750 off a bloke who had lost interest, and then I sold the wing cos I didn't like it. Bought new they would have cost me about £6500. I did buy a new reserve though!! I am thinking of getting a hang glider too and maybe getting a power unit for that but we shall have to see!
