Overnighting on Mull with campervan

Hi wanting to climb Ben More on Mull backend of August, looking at ferry booking page it says you need to book accomodation on site before you book ferry. Do they check this, we want to overnight in the car park at foot of Ben More. Has anyone been to Mull recently that can advise me. Thanks

If you are doing Ben More think about heading up Beinn Fhadda first then work your way along the ridge to A Choich then from there head up to Ben More. Although Beinn Fhada is not as high it’s my favourite hill on Mull, and harder to do than Ben More. Ben More from Dhisieg is a simple slog to the summit with gorgeous views over loch Na Keal towards Ulva. I do have to warn you if you decide to do this don’t do it in reverse, as there would be a very dodgy 100-150 ft drop from Ben More. It’s fine climbing up to Ben More but I personally would not fancy dropping down from Ben More. It’s a big day, but one of the best days hillwalking I have ever done. Enjoy your trip.

...And look out for the sea eagles - always around Ben More. Last time I was up there, I was looking down on them..

Wild camping, done sensibly and respectfully, is fine on Mull. Usual places like Calgary bay are good, but many more if you are prepared to go 'off piste'.
I always used to camp next to the beach a couple of miles before Knock farm, just along from Ben More, but not sure if signs have gone up now.
 
Avoid Calgary bay as far as parking overnight as it’s always rammed and a bit tight with a bigger van. Far quieter places to overnight on the island. IMO
 
There’s always a possibility you will be challenged, but I really can’t see a business turning paying customers away, profit will always take priority over integrity after all.

We stayed at the Dervaig view point, then went to the mountain and then spent a brilliant few days on their beach facing field at the Ardlanish weavers for £10 a night

Killiechronan Campsite | Visit Mull & Iona

Killiechronan Campsite is a very basic site with spectacular views and an abundance of wildlife. We have toilet and washing facilities but no showers or hook ups

At the head of Loch na Keal there’s a very basic campsite which charges £5 per person. It’s about two miles or so from Dhsieg were most ascend Ben More from. You should be able to park on the beech then ascend the mountain. There are a couple of spots on the other side of the loch that can be used. They do get busy during the day with bird watches looking for sea eagles. There are lots of places that are not listed were you can stop for the night. I would avoid taking my van to Tobermory, the ledaig carpark is normally crammed and it’s now £9 to park there for the day. Instead find somewhere to park nearby and walk in.
