Overnight stopover near Shap Fell please

We are off to the Western Isles in a few days time and plan to take the M6 from the Midlands after the evening rush to avoid the heavy traffic. That should put us near Shap Fell at about bed time. Any suggestions on suitable sites for the night welcomed?

There are a couple of CL's at Shap, if you belong to the Caravan and Camping Clubs. Can't remember offhand which clubs they are in. Also, there is a minor road off from the quarry that takes you over moorland, some of it strangely inbetween the two motorway lanes. Plenty of room to pull over there.

I have mentioned this before, I always stay on the main car park in the middle of Moffat, not the one on the way into Moffat, that has the usual signs saying no overnight parking etc. but the one in the town is ok.

There is a pub at Shap that allows overnight camping, cant remember the name but if you go on the pubs with camping website, its on there. Moffat is miles away from Shap! The pub leaves the door open to use the toilet etc and does meals. Hope this is of some help.

It's mentioned in the Shap thread too but this one was fine last week: exit M6 at J39, turn left, right down to the T junction, turn left again. Follow the road past the hotel entrance (2-3 miles) and up a hill. On top there is a large layby on the left hand side. Quite close to pylons but for a single night hopefully won't fry your brain! I find this quieter than the ones close to the motorway.

Have a great trip!
