Overnight stop near Thirsk or York

I will shortly be going Oop Norf to Thirsk to have a gas tank fitted, it's a long to go just for this so I'm going to spend a couple of days looking round York etc.
Can anyone recommend some good overnight spots near to these two towns? nij has posted some lay bys on the forum but these seem to be on busy main roads.
I'm hoping for somewhere quieter,
Any advice will be much appreciated.

Am I right in thinking your going to the gas man in Carlton Minniot? Search for the Dog and Gun in Carlton, they have a small campsite behind the pub.

Road between Coxwold & Byland Abbey. 2 OR Layby's 54.199623,-1.163102 on GM

Hi, We have used this spot several times in the past.

This one once, but its handy for the park& ride at rawcliffe bar.

We have stopped many times at the car park at top of sutton bank usualy other vans there. There are toilets think they open at 8.30am
