Can anyone recommend an overnight stop to watch the Severn bore.
A friendly pub on the banks would be great or just somewhere safe.

I must say I've never seen the bore and would like to. anyone know the best time of the year for the best effects?

2012 Times will give you the best times. The bore runs every day but the moon and tide change the expected size. There is also a random effect and sometimes even the big forecasted bores are small.

During the week is best to view as on weekends you get people surfing and motorboating on it which spoils the natural effect. After the bore wave passes there is an enormous flow of water - often missed by those who have gone to watch the 'bore'.

As an aside the local radio station was nick named the 'Severn Bore' :lol-053:

Get there early to view as there are lots of people who watch the bore.

Here's another link to info, including this years predicted times and sizes of the Severn Bore.....

Severn Bore Predictions 2012

The Environment Agency has always posted "official" annual prediction charts for the bore, but doesn't seem to have added 2012's to it's website yet. (I've recently read elsewhere that they may have stopped providing them now?)

There's also a smaller bore called the "Aegir" on the tidal stretch of the River Trent.

Some camp at the Severn Bore Inn at Minsterworth but also you'll spot stealth campers in many of the quiet lanes on the edge of the Forest of Dean and between Chepstow and Gloucester.

I visit most Bores - this year's are predicted to be 1* - 3* but last year's 4* were better than the 5* of 2010: http://youtu.be/2fL3SVWfLmg. I'll probably pop along to see those later this month.

Does anyone know if this to far upstream?

It's quite a distance up-river and you may need to leave the site early to drive to a viewing spot (so check there are no barriers or other movement restrictions). Bear in mind also that the popular viewing areas tend to fill up quickly so you'd need to aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before the Bore is due eg if you were aiming for a 7am Bore at Newnham you'd need to leave around 6am which might not be very popular on a campsite!

I would suggest you find a quiet camping spot and wild-camp for the night or park at the Severn Bore Inn at Minsterworth with the surfers.
