I have just been reading a topic on MHF and I see they are starting an overnight stopover scheme [ or trying to ] where members of their Forum can sign up and allow other members of their Forum to overnight on their property subject to space, sounds a good idea to me, any one here interested in a similar scheme for Wildcamping Members??:D:D

Something similar on Bongo Fury site but the database contains addresses and phone numbers of people who can offer stop over or accommodation, mechanichs help etc., to people experiencing mechanical breakdown. It works.

a good idea but i would only like to include the area like nearest town & phone number & perhaps what people have to offer ie water, toilet disposal etc.

I'm interested but we could only offer space (plus water and hook-up) to a small vehicle in our driveway.

I'm interested, we could offer space to a vehicle in our driveway.or a larger vehicle in the lay-by in front of the house, plus water and hook-up, "Anglesey". The older or DIY camper/van preferred.

I think the way to go would be a Data base accessable only by signed up members with contact details of host member . I think that the basic requirement to be a host would be to be able to offer one night free stopover with NO requirement to offer Electricity, water or dumping facilities. These facilities could be offered by hosts if they choose to, but they should NOT be expected as a right.Members offering a Stopover could add some details to the details on the Data base as to local facilities, places of interest nearby, local bus services etc.and also their requirements as to times they could be reasonably be contacted as to arrival times at their properties and of course the ,maximum size of vehicle they could accommodate. It will need the agreement of Admim to get such a scheme going and their help and willingness to start this off, I in no way claim this as my Baby and would not have the computer knowledge to set it up,it is just a germ of an idea that I had after reading of a similar scheme on another forum so all imput from any interested member and any additional ideas will obviously be needed.

i have sent a pm to phil to get his reaction on it. mentioning it was you who came up with it.

This has been mentioned on this site & many of the other motorhome sites but for some reason they never seem to work  I am a member of the Safe Knights a scheme set up by the Motorcaravanners Club, in the 3 years I have been a Safe Knight I have only had one couple stopover, I have used a few of them myself but talking to other members there seems to be a reluctance to call somebody up & ask to stop overnight at their place

I'm all in favour of something being organised but I have to say I'm disappointed that these things never seem to work in practice. I have also offered the chance of parking for free on my drive on other sites in the past but again not one single inquiry. I was asked by the MCC if I was willing to remain on the list as a Safe Knight (as they do every year) & reluctantly agreed as I would feel guilty about using other Safe Knights if I didn't (maybe that's why the system isn't that effective ) Maybe it requires some non monetary award to make people think they are not just freeloaders & removing the guilt complex:confused: If a scheme is organised on this site I would be willing to put my name down, I think that it need info on what size of van you can take & what the access is. It also needs to be restricted in some ways such as by PM so no details other than approximate location are published.

it is a great idea.
like a lot of ideas will it work in practice.
its up to all of us members to make it work.
if the scheme get off the ground , i hope it will, dont be shy about contacting others in the scheme. i dont think anyone will bite.

We live in a very small cul-de-sac and we have had a couple of friends overnight with their vans on our premises and we had a great time, but I would not do it as a norm as we had to move our own van out into the cul-de-sac to accommodate our friends.
But again I say we did have a great time.
We did give hook up toilet & shower facilities, water and dump and I think we even supplied the food & wine.
And before anyone asks NO:p:p

The similar scheme set up on Bongo Fury is for emergencies only. and if you want to include your name to their database you can add such things as room to park up, leccy offered, disposal etc., room for the night and food, help with mechanical problems and nearest (in their case) Bongo knowlegeable garage etc.
It does work and has got many people out of trouble after a breakdown.

Hi Walter,

We will probably be back up to the North East of Scotland later this year. We have always followed the coast but will try the inland route this year.

I am having to look at changing our plans, so nothing is fixed yet. It is all to do with the price of fuel and even the availability. If things go t*ts up in Saudi Arabia, I will be the owner of a big white shed.

Yes I'd be interested and I would consider joining as I've got some space....regards Rock

there seems to be quite an interest in offering overnight space.
the next question is how to implement it ie having a list of people who are willing to join the scheme .
any ideas ye more learned computer experts. phil any ideas ?
