Over 70 licence review petition

I presume they mean for over 3.5t motorhomes?

If someone does a petition, at least they could make an effort to explain what it is about more clearly in the main description - that one is a nonsence as it is presented.

(think I must have got out of bed the wrong side today!)

I'm afraid the person who set up the petition hasn't got the facts correct. Cat B is only up to 3.5t it matter not if it's a car or a motorhome, the reference to 8.25t refers to cat C + 750kg trailer

I think it’s a good idea to have a restricted license at 70, statistics say 65per cent of accidents involve somebody over 70, I was only 53 when I had my accident but I had at least two people over 70 watching me, and everybody says teenaged have accidents whilst driving on the phone that’s because their 70yo granny has phoned them and their in trouble if they don’t answer it😄😄😄😄

Signed I don’t want restrictions like this when I get to 70

not sure why a motorhome should be treated differently to a bus or lorry though? they can both kill lots of innocent people if the driver becomes incapacitated - as can a driver of a simple car or lighter van.

Regulations need to be tightened up for all if anything, not relaxed for a specific group.

(guess I haven't signed that petition?)

My thoughts exactly.... Overall standard of driving in this country is pretty dismal in my experience. (close to 300 miles a day up and down tye M6 corridor between Manchester and the Midlands)

You want to try driving in and around Dublin.:scared:

This is something that affects many motorhome users, there should be a recognition that amotorhome is not the same as a bus or lorry & should be treated differently.

I don't know why it should be treated differently. If it is over 3.5t it is probably as big as a truck or bus, with all the added dangers that involves, for instance size and stopping ability. A lorry or bus over 7.5t must have a tachogragh, with all the restrictions that involves. Surely a leisure driver is as dangerous as a professional driver, if not more so because they don't do as much of it.

Or Istanbul!

Seriously though I don't think driving standards here are too bad compared to the continent. The worst thing about driving in the UK is the roads are so heavily congested compared to just about anywhere on the continent. I'd say in terms of standards we're below Scandinavia and Germany but far better than the Mediterranean countries. Italy, Albania and Greece being amongst the worst.

In terms of licences for the over 70s. After the hair raising experience of being given a lift by my elderly father I'm going to start a petition to withdraw driving licences from anyone over 70. That's right, a blanket ban, use the bus! ;)

It should ease congestion and lower the market value of second hand motorhomes with all you old duffers off the road (ducks for cover!)

Yes to above,we had to by force take and sell wifes fathers skoda of him, turned right once into field then drove over a rd island, and final reversed back into lady causing squillions of pounds damage, mind you even at the best of times when a lot younger his driving was bad to,some folk are just not ment to get behind a wheel.

That sounds very extreme you know.

But ... I think a trial run would be worth doing - say for around 12 years 6 months maybe? and then scrap the plan

have i read this right

a petition to allow over seventies and parkinsons sufferers to drive motor homes over 3.5 tonnes without any requirement for regular medicals?

worrying thing is people have actually signed it...

I completely agree and I am coming up for 65.
None of us will be better drivers at 70 than we were in our younger years.
We have to remember what we are talking about here.
Vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes, being driven by people in their 70s and older without proper checks being carried out. The fact is no one is taking your c1 away from you automatically. If you pass the tests you can keep it intill you are no longer able. Better that than causing an accident and causing death and injury.

My last motorhome like many others (a Swift Escape 684) is normally plated at 3.5 ton, there is the option to have it plated at 3.7 ton allowing me an extra 200 kilos payload. The upgrade is purely a paperwork exercise.I could have it down plated to 3.5 ton, but it's still the same van. I don't think many would argue that 7.5 ton van is a large motorhome, but having a decent sized van with a suitable adequate payload could be built at around 4.5 - 5 ton. Too many vans are driven overweight. How many people can honestly say they can be certain they are keeping below the 3.5 limit & also each axle weight conforming to what was on the plate. I used to have a Rapido A class, I could keep within the overall weight limit but looking at the axle weights all my payload was at the back I was actually overloaded on the front axle with a full tank of diesel. I had to have the front springs changed & have the front re-plated to give me an extra 150 kgs on the front but this didn't increase the overall payload.

This can be said of any 3.5t van, I can't fathom why a motorhome should have different rules to any other vehicle on the road.

I for one can say for certain I am within my limits and would think many more can.
