In light of another posting on here i am wondering who do self builders of over 3.5 tonnes vehicles use in regards to breakdown and recovery cover???????
It seems that adac members are being stitched up if breaking down in the u.k.

About 20 years ago I took out Breakdown Insurance after being informed it would be OK for my + 3.5 tonne van. I then read reports and met M/Homers whom had been refused/denied service for spurious reasons such as vehicle too long, too heavy for the low loader etc general hassles. As a result after 1 year of Breakdown Cover, and ever since I've just been prepared to rely on my own resources.
Touch wood after 5 months of winter trips every year for 20 years to Spain Morocco Greece etc I've never broken down, one or two near misses!
Adac seem to have the larger vehicle covered ie up to 7.5 tonnes and up to 10 metres length I believe, they cover the person rather than the vehicle. I know that on another forum there are ongoing issues regarding Adac, nobody seems clear on just what the service covers, otherwise I would have been interested. Meantime I'll take the socket set!
I can't see that a self conversion would have any significance as regards to Breakdown Cover over a factory made jobbie, perhaps I'm missing something.

I've been considering Mayday, which is basically Green Flag through the Caravan Club, by going through the Caravan Club there are no weight or size restrictions according to the leaflets I have just had, it is only UK cover though which is fine for us at the moment.

I have been recovered 3 times now in france to garages. My breakdown cover is through my insurance with campton and it is with europ assist. They cover vehicles upto 5.5 tonnes. Not sure if you can get the breakdown cover if you don't have the insurance though. All three times the service has been excellent. My current van is a LWB 4.6 tonne merc sprinter twinnie, self build and fully modified to run on veg oil.

We do what Full Timer does and have never had a problem - Caravan Club; Mayday recovery.

Took out cover when I had my old 7.5 tonne merc, continued it with Maggie, the clapped out rusty Autosleeper ;)

Limit of 5.5 tonnes and/or UK only is no good for me. Some heavyweight M/Hs use the Commercial Vehicle Breakdown Cover as provided by most of the larger Recovery Insurers, you're then in with the 44 tonners, but you pay a hefty premium, and it no doubt pays to read the small print.

My dad is a caravan club member and has tried several times to get cover when he gets the Any SIZE of a Motorhome in the past and every time they refuse to cover the point he is thinking of complaining about false advertising ! Then again his self build is 22tons and 17 and 1/2 meters
he has a DKV card which does comercial break down and fuel plus a lot more but you pay for what you use !
